I have been working at Forsyth County (North Carolina) full-time

    Pros

good benefits, fair pay, room for advancement and professional growth. The schedule is made a year at a time so it is easy to make plans. Out of fourteen days we only work seven.

    Cons

The job can be stressful. At times there are several tasks that must be completed in a timely fashion so one must be able efficiently multi-task. The shift is often understaffed which can result in a heavier workload. However Human-Resources works very hard to resolve this issue. The shift rotate from 7a-7p to 7p-7a every two weeks.

    Pros

    Paid every two weeks
There are some very dedicated workers

    Cons

    Dishonest and dysfunctional leadership
Very low pay in comparison to other surrounding counties
No employee support - management and human resources functions only for purpose of finding ways to protect the wrong-doers

    Advice to Management

Find ways to support your dedicated, committed staff.

I have been working at Forsyth County (North Carolina) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent pay with good con-ed and a good place to cut your teeth running a lot of calls.

    Cons

Poor administrative leadership. Low overall moral of the crews on the street. Overworked, under appreciated, and understaffed. High rate of turn around in the first year or two. No where to move up in the organization.

    Advice to Management

The promoting from within a pool of poorly selected candidates needs to stop. Hiring from outside the service should be encouraged.

I worked at Forsyth County (North Carolina) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked for Forsyth County in the parks and recreation department. 1300+ acres of NC woodland, great staff and very supportive management. I always felt like there were new opportunities for anyone willing to put in the work and the county takes great care of it's employees.

    Cons

It's (county) government so there's always red tape to be dealt with.

    Pros

There is flexibility; you may be given the option to work a modified schedule. Access to county vehicles instead of using your personal vehicle. Friendly work environment and an open door policy.

    Cons

High turnover which results and high caseload.

    Advice to Management

Expedite hiring process - the agency takes awhile to fill postions.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Forsyth County (North Carolina) part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Paging is very easy if you know alphabetical and numerical order. It also helps to have a photographic memory and basic computer and search engine skills. It's great experience for customer service and computers and just enough physical labor to ready you for other jobs. It's a very lax environment most of the time and is a lot less stress inducing than a typical retail or food service job.

    Cons

You only get 18hrs a week at $7.25/hr with no possibility of raises or increased hours or benefits. You technically could get promoted with enough time, which is what I was hoping to do, but the county had a hiring freeze just as I had finished the 2 year requirement. The work isn't challenging, but it is comparable to the work that employees who get $15/hr do. The hours they work you are right in the middle of the day, too (11-2, 1-5), so finding shifts at other jobs to make up for what you aren't earning is extremely difficult.

    Advice to Management

Either pay your workers more or give them more hours. These jobs are for high schoolers trying to make extra cash anymore. Real people living real lives with real bills need these jobs, and the county should set an example by looking out for their own employees.

I have been working at Forsyth County (North Carolina) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Enjoyable work. Great people to work with.
Reasonable benefits and days off for sick time and annual leave and holidays

    Cons

LOW wages compared to similar jobs in neighboring counties in the region. Too much emphasis placed on office policies and procedures instead of serving the citizens of the county in the most efficient way possible. It's a disservice to our citIzens to pay employees such a low wage that they need to take advantage of programs such as WIC and SNAP in order to survive. Then, just about the time they are experienced enough to be effective in their job and have been the beneficiary of expensive education, they move to another county and receive 20% pay increase for doing so. It's a revolving door in some departments.

    Advice to Management

Consider raising pay to market level in order to retain employees and avoid the expense and headache of training employees over and over again.
