I have been working at Fort Hays State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits despite the horrible Kansas economy. Likely the best place to be employed in Hays, KS. Progressive university with a hometown feel.

    Cons

Staff salaries could use much improvement but this is challenging given the current financial problems in the State of Kansas. Sadly, the university doesn't seem to put value on longevity as newcomers make nearly the same as 20 year employees.

I worked at Fort Hays State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good instructors, very forward thinking, students are first priority in most cases, good benefits, good hours

    Cons

Supervisors poorly trained, no reward for loyalty, administrators care more about the business than the people, people get ahead based on brown nosing rather than on good work

    Advice to Management

Talk to your employees and find out what is really going on and reward employees for the good work they do. Stop rewarding brown nosing.

I worked at Fort Hays State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most of the departments are not good to work with! Especially for employees whom are not from United States or their roots from out of the states.

    Cons

Challenging your self first to do your best, but not in this institution if you are not from the states.

    Cons

I have been working at Fort Hays State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

friendly people, mostly. I made great friends there. Gellas is the best place there! good but few food joints such as The Golden Q or The Taco Place..., pretty affordable and good food at a few places! Gelllas had the best food and beer ever!

    Cons

boring, small town with only one Walmart and two supermarkets. Horrible to get out of there since it is so remote from everywhere. the pay was good, but not for online! No help from co-worker, really. Was too busy with other stuff than helping to introduce new colleague to community, etc. which was very disappointing! Glad I left!

    Advice to Management

listen to your employees if they are crying for help and make it easier for people to get introduced into the community, etc.

I worked at Fort Hays State University (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great Pay, work with the Public, Team work, teach younger generation how to stand your ground and still get things done.

    Cons

Hours were iffy, easily become a target especially at night, cold was a killer when no where to get warm at. Mealtime was questionable, didn't always have Safety Equipment provided. You had to provided your own Safety Jacket sometimes and when the Budget ran out no more job.

    Advice to Management

Have more than three backups, keep funding and have at least two people on duty at one time to cover either restroom breaks or mealtime.

I have been working at Fort Hays State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Relatively small campus in comparison to the larger Kansas institutions. Modern, well maintained university buildings. Great People. Located Conveniently between Kansas City and Denver.

    Cons

Not too much room for advancement. Salaries below state level.

    Advice to Management

Need more professional development training, and path to higher salaries.

I worked at Fort Hays State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

FHSU is a great place to work for. The university is much like a family there. The administration actually cares about teachers. The students are responsive to different teaching skills.

    Cons

I had a major problem with a senior professor who became a bully towards me, which lead to my decision to move on. Said professor has since left FHSU. I would likely still be there if the bullying did not happen like it did.

    Advice to Management

In my case, it would have been good if I would have been allowed to report being bullied to the administration directly. Unfortunately, my boss would not pass along the information to them because it would make the department look bad, so I had a rather rough year dealing with said individual within my department. My advice to the administration is to train the various heads of departments on dealing with workplace bullying, as it is not as isolated as one would think.
