I have been working at Fortinet full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Compensation and benefits are very good. Respect for work/life balance is driven from the top down. The organization is flat, moves quickly and lacks bureaucracy which makes it very easy to move initiatives forward and get results. The leadership has an open door policy which is truly open. Ken and Michael Xie are some of the best technologists in their field but truly humble and grounded. Industry-leading technology and and focus on innovation across the company, consistent growth and the company has an excellent long-term opportunity.

    Cons

The company gets a bad rap for marketing which sometimes is more than it deserves. Yes, it has it challenges and it is primarily a technology driven company but marketing change is a constant in the SV - Check Point, Proofpoint and others recently had CMOs stay less than a year.

    Advice to Management

Communicate and drive the company values broadly across the organization. Focus on culture and management empowerment. Implement consistent manager ratings and evaluations.

I worked at Fortinet full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good hardware. Innovative software features.

    Cons

Poor marketing. Bad middle management. Ineffective software QA. Time consuming TAC process. They want to be a Fortune 100 partner but they aren't mature enough to be there. The company has no internal directory so it's difficult to find contacts. They do this to "protect" their employers from poachers; I guess the CEO hasn't heard of LinkedIn.

    Advice to Management

Don't setup new employees with existing customer bad architecture problems and expect the new employee to guide the problem to a solution when the former seasoned employees couldn't get the job done themselves. That's known as a setup.

    I worked at Fortinet full-time

    Pros

Work is always interesting, the cyber security world is a rapidly changing market which means Fortinet and its employees have to be quick on their feet and ready to adapt. Good benefits and vacation packages. Hours are good.

    Cons

Stale working environment, not a lot of excitement in the office. Everyone is very fearful of management. Pay seems a little low for the cost of living in the silicon valley area.

    Advice to Management

Go out of your way to make your employees feel wanted and appreciated. Employees should be able to know who their boss is when he walks by.

    Pros

Great Benefits, Good People and financially sound.

    Cons

Very poor upper management, previous comment about Ken are very valid. CFO is a former controller and is simply concerned with amount of $ in the bank (ie Beancounter), has very poor relations with the street, and has zero vision in the space. Its really a shame because they have great technology but have zero understanding of marketing.

    Advice to Management

Ken, Relinquish your position and bring in someone who appreciates and understands marketing. PAN Is eating your lunch because they have made the needed investments in marketing. They are doing it with an inferior product in markets that given our technology we should be owning. Great article in Seeking Alpha re this last week.

I have been working at Fortinet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company was founded by and is still run by an engineer, so the products are leading edge. If that was all you needed to have long term success we'd be in great shape. Unfortunately....

    Cons

CEO and his close advisers, i.e. yes men, don't have a clue how to run a large organization. The company has outgrown them. I've been with the company for several years and made it through the most recent layoffs, but I won't be staying here for long. Upper management refuses to listen to competent industry experts. That's why you've seen two CMO's leave in a matter of 18 months.

    Advice to Management

Replace Ken immediately or sell the company, otherwise Fortinet is going to fail. There's a reason that Palo Alto is beating us with inferior technology...Ken Xie, CEO.

    Pros

Really aren't any. Very fragmented and confused management. Never sure where they are headed. Very much the knee jerk effect

    Cons

Poorly managed. Just had a layoff. Fired a guy who was in the middle of cancer treatments. Who would want to work for these guys. I couldn't believe it. But they got away with it because they had a downsizing. They knew he was sick.

    Advice to Management

Get your stuff together. Act like an American forward moving company.
