I worked at Fortnum & Mason for less than a year

    Pros

+ Good induction to work by a very knowledgable member of staff who gave us some extensive information about history of the company, its products etc. It was very helpful. + Great quality products which are a pleasure to show to customers. + Interior design of the store in Piccadilly is absolutely stunning. + Possibility of progression from a Sales Associate to a Floor Manager in a very short time.

    Cons

    – It's too cold to work there in winter as they're keeping the doors open. Their uniforms can't really warm you for more than an hour or two. Women have to wear skirts which make them freeze in a few minutes. It led to many people got sick and customers were feeling sorry for us when seeing our blue noses and frozen indifferent faces. The attitude of the managers was "deal with it". – Boring work because there were days and hours when there was absolutely nothing to do. Even if you cleaned shelves, organised merchandise, ordered new products, there're hours of doing nothing. You can't use your phone and you can't sit down as in many other retail places - rules are pretty much the same. – Temporary staff consists predominately of some young, straight from a college or uni girls and boys. Often it's their first job. They don't have any discipline. Instead of working, they just chit chat the whole day, gossip and hide in toilets to rest. They never bother to clean their work place even a little bit, order cash to have some in a till or order products which are finishing on the shelves.

I worked at Fortnum & Mason

    Pros

Lovely people - even though they hate the job they don't seem to hate each other Managers are quite flexible with requests

    Cons

Seriously understaffed for such a small shop - there's so much to be done and not enough people to do it Many health & safety hazards Terrible hours (first shift starts at 6am and last ends at 9.30pm) Bonus goes only to staff members that have been with the company for 1 year+ which is unfair with everyone having to put in so much effort No staff bathrooms or staff room - staff changes in a cupboard along with boxes and cleaning supplies with other staff members lining up to get in
