    Pros

Caring staff that really aim to fulfill their mission of changing the odds for children and youth. The organization is forward focused and innovative, with a variety of learning opportunities for staff at all levels. Great benefits, including generous PTO and medical insurance. Fun people, good work!

    Cons

The organization is growing and therefore they are changing structures and procedures to better support that growth and the staff, which requires patience on the part of staff who are looking for those new supports.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes the innovation can create disequilibrium for staff so it helps to keep communication lines open and frequent

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Forum for Youth Investment full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Friendly caring staff, mission driven organization. It is an excellent place to make connections at the national level with youth-serving organizations, as well as at the local level with people who are passionate about the lives of young people.

    Cons

Unlike many nonprofit organizations, the Forum doesn't have a bite-size "elevator pitch" mission and doesn't operate the way many people understand traditional nonprofits. Sometimes it's difficult to explain to people what we do. That can be a positive and a negative at times.

    Advice to Management

There are many opportunities available at the organization as well as in the greater DC nonprofit community. Staff sometimes need to be proactive in their efforts to capitalize on these opportunities. It might be helpful to sometimes provide a nudge to ensure staff are maximizing these options.

      Pros

Friendly, supportive, intellectually stimulating environment make this a great place to work overall. The organization strives to continually improve and do right by their employees.

      Cons

Micromanagement, the lack of clear vision for the organization's direction, and favoritism make it somewhat difficult to grow within the organization.

      Advice to Management

Keep working to create a vision everyone understands and can work toward building. Tap into the talents and abilities of current employees more to help determine that vision and make it a reality.
