I have been working at Foursquare full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Best company culture of anywhere I've ever worked. Tons of smart people who love to work on challenging problems. We're creating new technologies and new applications for them, which is exciting and fresh. Overall the atmosphere is very positive, optimistic and supportive. People and teams are given a lot of autonomy, so everyone's experience is probably pretty different and dependent on their team and manager. I... love my manager and have learned a lot from her, so this works well for me! Perks: We're moving into a shiny new office soon. Lots of free food, very flexible vacation policy, etc. Tons of on-going diversity & inclusion initiatives. Healthcare plan is completely covered and fantastic.

    Cons

The company is in a lot of different businesses - data licensing, brand advertising, consumer apps, APIs, SDKs, media measurement, etc. etc. There is so much going on and a lot of it is very complex. It can be hard to understand what other people are working on, how it comes together, how your role fits in.

    Advice to Management

As the company grows, reward the people who are inventive and move fast.

I worked at Foursquare full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - True transparency from the highest levels down to junior employees - A ton of autonomy and ownership across the company, especially in technical roles - The company is starting to make hard decisions about subpar talent and its product direction - BIG opportunities to disrupt the location intelligence space, especially after the Placed acquisition - Very strong talent across functions - People truly care... about each other and the company - Inclusive culture, the company feels like it believes and lives its values (most of the time) - A great alumni network, people that leave Foursquare go on to be very successful

    Cons

    - Compensation can't compete with FAANG - Product goals change constantly, it's hard to keep up - Took too long to re-focus on enterprise solutions over consumer apps - Lack of structure can be a blessing and a curse - Growing pains of a company trying to reach the next level

    Advice to Management

Keep making tough decisions that will allow Foursquare's potential to be realized. The technology is so powerful and a lack of strategic direction will hamper Foursquare's growth. Worry less about politics and more about the bottom line. Cultures evolve and the Foursquare of old is dead. Long live Foursquare!

I have been working at Foursquare full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

CEO successfully pivoted the company from consumer to enterprise business. Consumer apps are dead, but enterprise products still have a chance. Sales team is good at its job. Company has not engaged in any privacy violations.

    Cons

Senior engineering management views arrogance and authoritarianism as virtues. Individual contributors are not valued as much as "managers". Culture is corporate and political. Amidst the dysfunction, tech is falling behind.

    Advice to Management

CEO needs to have lots of one on ones with engineers at all levels, learn about ongoing frustrations, and set up a senior engineering management that is not stymied by corporate politics, authoritarianism, and ego.

I worked at Foursquare for less than a year

    Pros

As an intern, I always felt my opinion was heard and valued. Foursquare has a vibrant culture and office space to match. It's a fun experience to work in a company where everyone is using the consumer apps on a regular basis. Free lunch Tuesdays and Thursdays, ridiculously stocked snack corner, and beer/wine on tap. Very transparent work environment. Information is not silo-ed or hidden from the entirety of the... company, so everyone can provide input at Tuesday team meetings. Unfortunately, the Support Intern role does not include a full-time job opportunity as the role is constantly rotating with new interns. But I still recommend current students/new grads apply, because you'll meet great people and, hopefully, awesome connections!

    Cons

It would be great if Foursquare offered a full-time offer for high-performing interns within this position.

    Advice to Management

Clearly define Foursquare's business and OKRs. Marketing and branding sometimes felt inconsistent internally. Are you a utilitarian app, a gaming app, or providing location-based marketing solutions?
