I worked at Francis Cauffman as a contractor

    Pros

A lot of responsibility that definitely gets you trained to be an architect. They treat their employees pretty well on a day to day basis.

    Cons

The place is a revolving door with too many contract workers that when it comes time to convert they too often let them walk away. This also happens with good talent looking for more challenging and rewarding work.

    Advice to Management

They need to invigorate that staff with getting more interesting work not just work that pays the bills. They should bring in higher talent to win more work because they do have a few very capable people of completing this work.

I worked at Francis Cauffman full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

In the beginning the office space and the location are nice, and amenities and benefits are convenient . On the surface I found the workplace and the staff to be very pleasant - met some great people, many originally from other countries.

    Cons

From the outside it appears to be a legitimately stable company with years of experience and a solid team of friendly professionals - key word is "appears". From the inside that is not the case at all. There is a lack of communication, organization and direction. The office is so quiet you could almost hear a pin drop. Management in NY is scarce - most is in Philadelphia. Architectural staff is partly temp hires. The permanent staff in NY works late hours. Librarian is rarely on site. There is a lot of turnover - from senior management to human resources, marketing and staff.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting the achievements of founding partners of the firm if you don't deliver what you promise. If you seek to build a happy client base, you must first be able to maintain a happy team. Quote - "Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients" - Sir Richard Branson

I worked at Francis Cauffman full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, working with several different projects and clients. Pride in contributing to the success of a project.

    Cons

communication still lacks between some project managers and staff. This greatly effects the project and the visual perspective to the client.

I worked at Francis Cauffman full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, flexible work place, and reasonable hours.

    Cons

Low pay! As a licensed architect I was almost insulted by their first offer. But they tried to sweeten the deal with a small signing bonus and promises of quick raises and profit-sharing, both of which turned out to be false. I felt misled. The Philadelphia office is a huge open room with zero privacy. It feels very cold and impersonal, and in general I found the office to be very clique-y and the people overall not very friendly. I heard the New York office is totally different (and better) but I can't speak toward that.

The other major con is the design quality, which is quite low. Don't be fooled by the glitzy website... most of the projects are low-end tenant fit-outs. There is only a small handful of people in the office who do ALL the design work, while everyone else just produces drawings for generic healthcare work. Boring.
