"One of the best PE firms to work for"

I have been working at Francisco Partners full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I have been owned by or associated with several PE firms for over 15 years. The one thing they all have in common is very intelligent people. Unfortunately in most cases this manifests itself in huge egos and treating people badly. I have found FP to be the different and it starts at the top. Just like other PE firms people are extremely intelligent, however the similarities stop there. People are humble, fun and value what I do. People spend their whole career looking for that... DJ has created culture where how you treat people no matter their role matters and this is very evident. I could work at any number of PE firms, but why would I when I feel I am already at the best one.

    Cons

The only real downside is unpredictable travel. This is a reality in the PE space so it is not specific to FP.

I have been working at Francisco Partners full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The biggest pro is simply working for a world-class technology investment firm that has a robust value creation playbook and yet treats its companies' management teams with respect and grants them appropriate autonomy. The culture at FP is also unique in the PE industry as folks tend to be incredibly bright yet humble and open to listening to alternative views. No voice goes unheard and every stakeholder is openly invited to contribute and challenge prevailing views, whether a Deal Team Partner or Associate or an Operating Team (FPC) member. It's a very flat hierarchy (which is rare) and offers amazing career progression opportunities. The Senior Deal Team has gone a long way to professionalize the firm and its organizational model to enable greater empowerment to the rest of the firm without the bottlenecks of "old guard" management you often see at other PE firms.

    Cons

Deal cycles are unpredictable and your work priorities can shift overnight. The job forces you to manage a lot of inputs and work streams at once, and it can be a challenge to sideline everything in pursuit of a deal when diligence heats up. This is less of a con for FP and more of a trade-off you have to learn when working in any private equity firm.

    Advice to Management

Continue to maintain the transparent/open culture even with the ongoing growth and success of the firm. Continue to build out the people processes to ensure team members receive adequate feedback and professional development opportunities.

I have been working at Francisco Partners full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I've been with FP for 9+ years and the experience has been great. The management team at FP is smart, respectful and constantly challenging all levels at the firm. I started at the bottom but have been given opportunities to learn and excel to a management position.

Unlike other PE firms, all departments are in constantly communication and work together collectively.

In the PE world, performance is what matters. As an employee, coming to work excited and challenged is more important. FP does it all.

    Cons

    More firm wide social events.

    Pros

DJ has a highly effective and versatile leadership style to fit the market, company, CEO and the leadership team. Has also built some great great talent around him. Love the new deals and the opportunity for returns on them.

    Cons

Wish they could raise a lot more money so they could have more companies under Managment and less time out raising it.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you have been doing. Like the new deals you are banking on to make break throughs.

Great people - VERY intelligent, friendly and nice (not usual for a PE firm), strong relationships with companies, bankers and investors -- you will learn a lot!
Great leadership - The best of the best in leadership roles.
Great strategy - investing in multiple sectors in tech, mostly buyouts but also some minority stakes and startups
Great results - excellent investment process, highly analytical, usually get everything right - buy-in, operations and exit. Enables them to raise more money and provide growth opportunities to everyone.
Great investors - the best L.P.'s - endownments and pension funds. You will be working for teachers, public servants and career employees. It just feels good.

    Cons

You work hard but its worth it.

    Advice to Management

Keep going from strength to strength

Intellectually challenging environment in the fast paced tech sector. A real meritocracy with actually nice people.

    Cons

The hours can be very long and your schedule will be predictably unpredictable, making it hard to plan non work related activities.

    Advice to Management

Consider ways to help people protect their extracurricular commitments, and keep doing what you are doing.

I worked at Francisco Partners full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Apparently an amazing PR firm and/or legal representation which can fool and blindside even the most diligent, honest, genuine business owners

    Cons

FP claims to be different from other private equity firms. They sell an image of a firm that embraces quality employees and quality products, and enables both to achieve scalability. While they do identify ways to "scale", they DO NOT embrace quality emoloyees or quality product. In my experience, they took a unique company and applied off the shelf scalability that resulted in loss of talented, loyal emoloyees as well as degradation of product quality.

If you work for a company that is being evaluated by FP, or has been purchased by FP, update your resume and prepare to get out.

If you own a company that is being evaluated by FP, and if your employees and/or the integrity or spirit of your product are important to you, please, please, PLEASE reconsider.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate and scrutinize your operating partners more accurately. You have at least one operating partner who makes decisions that are ultimately detrimental to the businesses in which you invest. The opinion of the partner(s) not only dictates his impact on the companies you buy, but the opinions of consultants and eventual employees who shape your investments going forward.
You (FP) currently own at least one company that could have performed beyond your wildest expectations, had decisions made by at least one of your operating partners, followed by those of newly hired executives, been accurately evaluated.
