I worked at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Worked with amazing and hard working folks. Good benefits.

    Cons

Senior leadership has no respect for non-faculty scientists. Focus is clearly on how much money your projects can raise for the coffers. New leadership is destroying culture.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the roots of The Hutch. Think about the culture.

I worked at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful campus and close to the water.

    Cons

The reviews on here are planted by HR and upper management. This place will chew you up and spit you out. Managers are awful and the doctors save all bedside manner for their patients. Do not work here, the pay is below scale and the amount of work you do is often many jobs rolled into one. I've heard stories from VIDD division that would make you cringe. CRD is no better. Sure they give you 140 hours of "free" sick leave but make you feel so guilty for using it you end up working sick and never getting better.

    Advice to Management

Give better raises and more opportunity not more work.

    Pros

easy interview and you just have to make them happy

    Cons

The interview process takes 8 months, and they do not contact you when they rejected you. It's not just rude, but unprofessional. The least they can do is to contact you when they don't think you are a good fit, but they'd keep you in the profile and give you hope, then reject you months later. It's a complete waste of time.

    Pros

Nothing worth mentioning. The campus is pretty.

    Cons

I have a hard time believing half of these positive reviews are real. Some of the worst people I've ever met work here. Stay away from VIDD - toxic work environment! Staff is treated like second class citizens. They use you up and then toss you like garbage when they become bored with you.

    Advice to Management

Stop pushing old staff out the door, age discrimination? You give people sick time and then harass them for using it. You are not gods, what have you accomplished, really.

I worked at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You will collect a pay check for years without producing anything

    Cons

Lots of people who have been there for many years and they are real fossils who will not tolerate any type of change. Very inefficient and behind the times.

    Advice to Management

Fire most of your managements and hire some who will actually do some work!

    Pros

Bone marrow transplant by Dr Thomas decades ago. There are some very nice people but a majority lack any real skills. They wouldn't survive anywhere else.

    Cons

Scientist with huge egos wasting government funds and funds from local community. Riding on tail of Bone marrow transplant.

    Advice to Management

Get a grip on reality. You are not gods. What have you really done?

I worked at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working for an organization that works to cure cancer and HIV/AIDS
    Great location

    Cons

Lack of skilled management. Project Coordinators (at least mine, I should say) was woefully unskilled in how to manage/supervise, never training you, just expecting you to be psychic when you walk in the door, and setting you up to fail. HR is completely useless. As in other reviews, they do not care about you if you are not science/research staff or faculty. Administrative staff are regarded as second class citizens.

    Advice to Management

Management should all be required to take classes on how to effectively train and supervise if they are required to do so in their role. Program Coordinators blame lower-level admins for their own ineptitude. High pressure, high stress grant dependent environment. My direct supervisor was hostile, completely incapable of training, and obviously had personal issues that caused anger problems. I found out afterwards that I had been this department's fourth assistant, and now understand why I would get the "sympathy glance" when I informed them who I reported to.

I have been working at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good culture diversity. Idea of advancing medicine and science. Long term employees with knowledge. Lots of good mentors willing to give experience to co workers. Advancing science by integrating young adults into the field.

    Cons

Managers evolved in too much politics. Management lack of communication among departments, Some department managers evolved in unethical behaviors. Disrespect to departing employees, negative talk within departments causing employees to become demoralized. Low communication between management , HR and payroll.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with respect. Recent laid off workers were not offered severence packages. The employees had given over 10 years of service individually, leaving with good standing and long term service. How horrible to treat employees with no empathy and respect. The is demoralizing to the departing employee, as well as demoralizing to the remaining employees. This can destroy a companies reputation. For a company that relies partly of public contribution, it really bad business to treat employees in this manner.
PAY THE EMPLOYEES THEIR SEVERENCE . Protect the company, the remaining employees and the companies future employees from bad public information.
Management is completely unqualified and unprofessional and they lack the form of communication among departments and their employees.
