I worked at Fred Meyer part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

informal atmosphere, felt looked after by bosses, co-workers and bosses all feel the exasperation of difficult customers, moving up is encouraged but staying at parcel level has no stigma, put in my two weeks and phased out smoothly

    Cons

Some of the bosses are stricter about inconsequential rules than others. Ex, not being able to put up a temporary makeshift sign that a bathroom is closed, making customers think they can enter no problem? Rule following is also prioritized over efficiency of work. I know guidelines come from management above the store-level, and thus it's their job to figure out which rules are causing more problems than benefits. I never closed but apparently being a closing parcel is a lot harder and more frustrating than any other shift.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the 6 cart minimum; no one and I mean NO ONE follows it. Ease up on your rule about two no-shows (no matter how far apart) = firing; someone's performance record ought to be in that decision or else you can let go valuable employees. In afternoons and evenings, the parcel with the phone should not be tasked to pull carts or clean bathrooms at the same time; we can't clone ourselves--you do want cleanliness, organization, AND happy customers, right? Clean the bottoms of the outside garbage cans more than never--gross gross gross! Use garbage bags that are much heavier duty--it hugely discourages parcels from taking in the garbage more often, when almost every time there's a rip that complicates the throwing-away process. The bathroom cleaning is overkill; NO ONE follows EVERY procedure every hour; the necessity for it being done every hour on the dot is also impossible when it's a parcel's job to help customers as well.

    Pros

    Great supportive staff; good pay.

    Cons

Hours are sporadic, though there are plenty of hours if you wanted to pick up more. It makes you tired of interacting with people and at this particular store, there are tons of people you'll be interacting with.
