RecommendsPositive OutlookI have been working at Freedom Communications full-time for more than 10 years
Pros
Even though you do the same thing every day, it is always different because we are a daily newspaper. The work environment is friendly and not high pressure. We are more like family instead of just employees. There is a certain prestige that comes with working for the newspaper. The benefits for full time employees are decent.
Cons
Because we are a smaller community paper, the pay scale here is lower than it is at larger metropolitan papers. Also, there is insufficient training for new hires.

Doesn't RecommendNegative OutlookI worked at Freedom Communications part-time for more than a year
Pros
Media Company focused in newspaper business
Cons
Bad Management - new one . No sense of business and no respect for any personnels. They will chase pennies in the carpet where ever possible when it comes to compensate the employees and on the other side will lavishly spend on their travel/entertainment. Do not think of joining this organization . They will not pay the salaries and on asking will fire you from the position.

Doesn't RecommendNo opinion of CEOI worked at Freedom Communications
Pros
Plenty of opportunity for public-service journalism if you pursue it on your own. A number of accomplished professionals as colleagues.
Cons
Like nearly all newspaper companies, Freedom has struggled to adapt to a changing media environment. That leaves employees with a high degree of uncertainty about the future.

I worked at Freedom Communications
Pros
It is a small newspaper, which means you learn how to do everything associated with the news industry (writing, editing, page design, etc.). You can make input into the daily decisions that are needed to put out a newspaper.
Cons
The pay is bad and they keep asking employees to do more with less. Management has not replaced recent departures while trying to upgrade their web presence. That has meant asking reporters and copy editors to take on additional roles with the web site while maintaining their productivity for the print edition.

Doesn't RecommendNo opinion of CEOI worked at Freedom Communications
Pros
The company was devoted to producing solid, well-informed articles for their readers before the industry began to tank. Decent equipment to use and a pleasant work environment.
Cons
Company really cut back on quality of journalism. Cut reporters and staff and piled work on everyone else. Which led to diluted articles and content. That caused readers to be dissatisfied with the newspaper and its coverage. We made the paper less important, less interesting, while giving our reads less of a reason to read it.

Doesn't RecommendDisapproves of CEOI have been working at Freedom Communications
Pros
Good people, who are fun and thoughtful to work with. Working for a newspaper company is unique because you are like no other industry in the world. Centralized location for Orange County residents. Nice facilities.
Cons
Constant downsizing. Newpapers are not in a healthy place, thus money is VERY tight, and there are little to no perks to working. Wage and hiring freezes are a constant, and are now expected. Cuts to everything is also constant and expected.

Doesn't RecommendNo opinion of CEOI have been working at Freedom Communications
Pros
Opportunity to learn, a lot of freedom to explore and discover new things, very flexible with schedules, good equipment and tools to work.
Cons
It's really unfortunate that the newspaper industry is suffering a hard economic impact that makes working for Freedom or any other newspaper company an experience full of uncertainty about what's going to happen in an immediate future.

RecommendsNo opinion of CEOI worked at Freedom Communications
Pros
Work / life balance; Good environment to learn new technologies. Good manager. People are nice and friendly to work with. I learned a lot while working there.
Cons
The industry is declining. Revenue is declining. Executives get huge bonuses. One newspaper was folded, but the executive at that newspaper still get bonuses. Outsourcing tech jobs oversea. :=(
