I worked at Freedom House part-time for less than a year

          Pros

The work you do is great -- you get to actually contribute to the proposals for RFPs and Solicitations, you get to gain experience with budgeting, milestones, M&E, etc. You also have to do a lot of the back end work for projects like business expense reports etc. But overall, it's good experience and a good way to learn the ropes.

          Cons

You only get a $500 stipend per month which, if you're working 20hrs/week, really isn't much. The office is also a little siloed -- you get to speak and interact with your team but that's really all.

I worked at Freedom House full-time for more than a year

          Pros

I don’t remember any pros rather than getting a good network.

          Cons

The employees are treated worst than animals at a zoo, especially in the grants management team.

I have been working at Freedom House full-time for more than 3 years

            Pros

Everyone below the level of Director is carrying the organization and are subjected to abuse by HR and one Senior Exec who has no idea how to communicate openly; dictates and is an over glorified copy editor whose paid over $175k

            Cons

Senior VPs - toxic, along with HR - they have no sense of what the programs do, and they do not know ethics. They allow abusive managers to remain employed and they are not above letting the abusive to enter into the area of retaliation and complicity. Execs, mainly one Senior Level VP walks out of meetings, is hostile and is a bureaucrat who acts as a buffer between staff and the new President. Rather than openness,...

            Advice to Management

The new President should wake and see that the staff are being abused and retaliated against if they ask questions - by the most senior exec - a person who is abusive and unethical and she is matched by an HR department whom staff will never turn to because they cannot be trusted not to be petty and self-serving - if you ask a question or stand up for yourself you are met with hostility and passive-aggressive behavior...

I worked at Freedom House full-time for more than a year

            Pros

Freedom House is made up of passionate and devoted staff who work tirelessly for minimal compensation to foster human rights world wide.

            Cons

The MENA team has a history of systemic abuse that creates a hostile work environment. Although the under staffing fosters learning, the management routinely relys on abusive management tactics that do not lead to professional growth or strong performance. I would not advise joining the MENA team.

            Advice to Management

There must be training on management skills for all managers and executive level invention for managers that routinely demonstrate abusive behavior and thus have poor staff retention.
