I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern

    Pros

Very friendly staff, passionate team members. Great camaraderie in the geo department.

    Cons

Physical duties did not match job description. Two members in the team (including myself) sustained spinal injuries during time at work. Other employee's injury was accounted for, mines was not likely due to intern status and untimely realization of injury. Unfortunately, no proof could be provided of injury at the time.

Geology tended to be the throwaway department at the mine. Time-sensitive duties deemed undesirable was pushed on us to stay past work hours and complete. Management can be old-fashioned. Projects vary dramatically between sites and seemingly based on random which site you work in. Carrying samples (up to 50 lbs) and loading/unloading onto trucks were undertaken daily for several weeks depending on project duration. Poor communication between departments lead to dangerous, unneeded exposure to dangerous work. In hindsight, much of the strenuous labor could have been prevented if there were adequate communication and cooperation between drillers and geologists.

    Advice to Management

Better evaluate hazards of project duties.

I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

They pay well and provide a housing stipend. There's a lot of places to go in the company and industry

    Cons

Was called slow by one of my Supervisors, was given no support, almost filed a hostile work environment claim

    Advice to Management

Keep a closer eye on employee relations, don't turn a blind eye to things you don't want to see

    I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

the moneys good, benefits are great

    Cons

hauzordes enviromment, management team needs to take a course in, People Skills. you have supervisors, that will be laughing and joking with certain persons of a crew.and then a certain person or persons, will walk up on them, and the supervisors face will go from happy, to mad frown, jaw drop to the ground, hate in your eyes kinda face. they need to treat the haul truck drivers, with dignity and respect. there the ones making the$$ for this so cold outfit... rather than trying to judge a book by its cover.and you have to get used to the fatiuge , physical & mental abuse, from the enviroment, long hours & shiftwork

    Advice to Management

study up on your management supervisor, and leadership skills.before you become part of the management team. oh,, and i almost forgot, Do not let the position go to your empty head... fill it with knowledge first.. (signed) USED TO BE YOURS!!

I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for if you want to make your own decisions

    Cons

Biggest con is buying an oil and gas company at the wrong time, but NO ONE saw that coming. It is what it is and you move on. It impacted myself for the minesite I work at, but I had a great career with Freeport over the 28 years.

    Advice to Management

Only advise is do not let the business get personal. The executive management was amazing in envisioning where the company should go in the future. All you have to say is Phelps-Dodge. What a great mesh on management and mine assets.

    Pros

Training from the trainers was great.

    Cons

The female HR Leadership of NW operations is a joke. You're treated like a child and talked down to like a second class citizen. Has favorites and isn't afraid to show it. Ignores pleas for help onsite unless its in her best interest. Has a big chip on her shoulder and if she doesn't like you, your out. Your best bet is to move on.....

    Advice to Management

It does no good to use the ethics hotline......witnesses are then retaliated against horribly.

    Pros

Some nice people albeit few and far between and the work environment was interesting. Almost wanted to stay.

    Cons

Most everybody seems to have been from the former Phelps-Dodge entity, which was not an employee friendly company -from what many there had mentioned to me- consequently, this might explain the cut-throat nature of many a "leadership" type of individuals (Maintenance; Engineers; Project Managers, etc.). Unnecessary duplication of workloads with false requirements in the computerized system due to everybody covering their posterior. Unrealistic timelines from previously scheduled Repairs / Maintenance to becoming emergencies 4 times a day.

    Pros

This company has competitive pay and always gives you projects to continually work on throughout the internship

    Cons

The mining industry fluctuates so when it's a down turn the company really suffers

    Advice to Management

Be more prepared as to what you want interns to do for you
