I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern

    Pros

Good exposure to field environment and site tours of the company locations is helpful

    Cons

    Not a very competitive environment

    Advice to Management

Some managers are too intimidating and they need to provide a friendlier atmosphere for interns

    Pros

Benefit package is better than most. If you are unhappy at current position there is plenty of opportunity to transfer.

    Cons

Journeyman pay is low and too long of work hours.

    Advice to Management

Pay journeyman more and do not require so much mandatory overtime.

I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern

    Pros

the pay is really good for an intern, the company pays for housing, and transportation to get to your location. There were a lot of opportunities for me to go out in the field and shadow other engineers in meetings in the office and field. Lots of opportunities to move up if offered a full time position.

    Cons

You will be assigned a mentor prior to the internship. I strongly recommend communicating with them and talking about your expectations of the internship vs their expectations prior to arriving at your location. Some interns had mentors that taught them how to daily work and participate in the operating plans and others had mentors who took off for the summer and barely knew their intern existed. Throughout the intern program you are assigned a project to work on then present to upper management and any interns that want to go watch. You are expected to work on project(s) the whole summer and prepare for your presentation. If your presentation/project is really good you will be picked to present it in Tucson to upper/corporate management. If not, you are still invited to attend the intern conference. If you work in the mine, you will need to find a ride in and out of the office inside the mine (at Morenci at least) and interns are not allowed to drive company vehicles. Most of Freeport's operations are in the middle of nowhere but same with most any metals mines.

I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern

    Pros

Pay, Relocation (to and from college), Experience

    Cons

Didn't learn much of anything, employees were biased based on university, not given proper needed field training, no overtime

    Advice to Management

Read your intern's resume and communicate effectively with HR about your intern before allowing them to relocate to your site. Age doesn't necessarily mean that you know everything. Let the younger generation move the company forward. Fresh minds will fuel the company to even better motions.

I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I get lots of time off. I'm out side in nature most of the time with little to no supervision.

    Cons

Working for the mine, most people have to work night shift or rotating shifts. Not good for family life or to plan events out.

    Advice to Management

Try to figure out a better schedule. Make it so people are not rotating from nights to days so often. Better yet Have the people that like nights work nights, and have the people that like days work days.
