I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Freeport is a great company to work for and it takes great care of its employees. With the current price of commodities, cuts have been made, but every effort to relocate employees has been made for those willing to move. I have been quite impressed.

    Cons

Freeport is a Fortune 500 company, and due to its size, corporate bureaucracy can slow down the process of hiring, or getting change implemented internally.

    Advice to Management

A bit more focus on the professional development of employees such as a mentoring program would help retain employees. I know three or four promising employees that left because they didn't feel that they were being challenged, or prepared for potential professional growth.

I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Freeport has a company culture that is smart and aggressive. You are surrounded by experience leadership that understands both the business and what you do. This means leadership understands your strengths, and help where you need to grow. Also, Freeport is in commodities, which is a cyclical business, but it provides a lot of opportunity. When things are slow, the company stops external hiring, which means open job positions have to be filled from within, providing individuals room to grow as others leave.

    Cons

One of the hard parts about working with a sharp management team is that there is no where to hide (and if you work hard, there is no need to). One of the prior issues was a lack of promotion from within, but we've seen a lot of progress in this area over the last couple of years. Also, because the company works in commodities, there are times that the company has to cut back. My experience is that this has been done well, and spots are found for sharp individuals.

    Advice to Management

Freeport has a top management team. They hire top individuals, and it shows throughout the organization. While there are places where there is room to grow, I see the organization recognizing the gaps and working to fill them.

    I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Generally lots of overtime, even if you don't want it. Most of the people are decent

    Cons

Company culture is awful. They pretty much own you and they know it. Most of your day involves hiding and not being seen. HR completely runs the place and they will fry you in a heartbeat for any reason. I have never worked for a company that was so ready to terminate you for the slightest infraction (real or perceived). Nepotism and cronyism is rampant. Everyone is scared of losing their job instead of actually doing their job.

    Advice to Management

Get off your behinds and actually go out into the mine and see what is going on. Try not treating your employees like dirt and you might get more out of them.

I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Cheap rent, quiet home life, all amenities are close by. Variety of work.

    Cons

Constant restructuring. No one can decide on what is priority. No one likes to delve into the details to get to the root of the problem, thus very little learning and progress is actually made.

    Advice to Management

Don't fold under the pressure from above, and don't commit to anything without consenting both your uppers and your lowers. As soon as a you do otherwise, you force everyone under you to do the same. And so the spiral continues.
