    Pros

Great Professors and mentors, good access to equipment and lab space. Nice location right outside the city of Berlin

    Cons

Project was not organized well. Time was constrained so not much was able to get done. Classes were running during our research so there was not much guidance

    Pros

Highly collaborative and international environment, with all the positives of the German work ethic

I have been working at Freie Universität Berlin part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Helpful office staff and a lot of freedom for the lecturer to design courses and topics to teach, once one is given a lecturer position

    Cons

Low salary as a lecturer, one should have a fellowship or a post doc project to maintain a living outside lecturing

I have been working at Freie Universität Berlin full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Location in Berlin. Dynamic and interesting international academic environment in the city as a whole.

    Cons

Budget problems lead to very severe financial pressure. Little rational long-term planning is possible, since all initiatives are financed by short-term external money. Salaries for professors are contingent on meeting specific and often unreasonable targets for grant spending. Failure to reach these targets result in permanent salary cuts. Highly inflexible bureaucratic organization.

    Advice to Management

Less focus on short-term grant money. More focus on long-term stable financing of basic university infrastructure. More effective and supportive administrative services are badly needed.

I have been working at Freie Universität Berlin part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In general, FU provides a stimulating research environment; it hosts several research collaborative centers; a lot of opportunities for soft skill training are offered through Dahlem research school

    Cons

    Regular scientific duties are usually encompassed with teaching duties also for PhD students payed by third-party funding; in general teaching activities are not well regulated;

    Advice to Management

PhD salaries or fellowship vary across the different departments, and even within the same department

    Pros

Great research university in a beautiful city. Smart students, friendly colleagues, excellent libraries and buildings

    Cons

German hierarchy, over filled classrooms, lack of stability in work contracts, students who have to work and can't commit fully to their learning

    Advice to Management

Commit to further the mission if the FUB through contributing capacity to help Germany address current social challenges like Refugee settlement, environmental development and school justice.
