I have been working at Fresenius Medical Care - North America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Clinics function like small communities and there is a strong emphasis on working together as a team. I have felt very supported by my peers and immediate supervisors. Moreover, working in dialysis provides the opportunity to build long-standing therapeutic relationships with our clients.

The work-life balance of a facility social worker is excellent! Social Work services are provided during regular business hours, with no evening, weekend or on-call shifts. The PTO policy is also extremely generous.

Fresenius's benefits package is comprehensive and includes insurance coverage, 401k, clinical supervision towards LCSW, annual reimbursement for continuing education and more.

    Cons

I think Fresenius needs to do more to promote the value of Social Workers within the company. Second to physicians, Social Workers are typically the clinical staff member with the highest degree. Unfortunately, there are very few opportunities for Social Workers to obtain promotions, as most managerial or specialized roles are designated for nurses. This creates a problem where seasoned social workers are underpaid and have supervisors who may not understand the nature of social work or how to utilize social workers to their fullest potential.

    Advice to Management

Create more opportunities for Social Workers to be utilized at different levels of the company, or offer incentives for seasoned facility social workers, such as creating an MSW III position. Analyze compensation rates in similar medical or insurance-based Social Work positions in order to remain competitive.
