I worked at Fry (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company was dynamic and growing and was led by really smart people. The work environment was casual and friendly. Management was open to employees forging their own career path within the company, and changing roles within the organization was acceptable. It was a fun place to work until it was acquired by Micros in 2008.

    Cons

In the early days, management roles shifted a lot which led to some confusion and inconsistency. Internal communication was sometimes poor which led to a lot of rumors and speculation.

I worked at Fry (More than a year)

    Pros

Good exposure to working with exciting clients, good team atmosphere where everyone is willing to help. A very good learning opportunity for anyone who is new to technology and the ecommerce world.

    Cons

Lack of support from management, lack of direction from management especially after the several acquisitions. I believe it is finally owned by Oracle. The New York office where I was based was poorly managed

    Advice to Management

Look after employees, especially in creating careers paths for junior developers who can form a good baseline for the company.

    Lots of smart nice people.

    Cons

    Watch for groups siding together

    Advice to Management

    Move faster

I have been working at Fry full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They have high standards for the quality of work they will release. People are cool- no drama. The environment is professional and you can focus on doing a good job, not navigating office politics. Direct managers seem to really care.

    Cons

Sometimes the planning isn't that good and people work a lot of overtime. Management and senior team members are overworked, so sometimes they aren't able to support you as much as they'd like. Also, there can be odd issues when you have to work with the parent company.

    Advice to Management

Plan better! There's no reason for us to have these ugly crunches at the end of every single project. Some of us have been putting out fires every day for a year.

    * flexible hours with telecommuting and flexible schedules
    * growing company with a large Product development group

    Cons

I worked at Fry full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed work environment, interesting work, great people, and great work/life balance. Being a consultant can be tough, but the work is rewarding.

    Cons

Pay is not as competitive as working in downtown Chicago, but living and working in the suburbs worked for me. The company is not as bad as previous reviews with Micros taking over. It's a job and people that don't like change simply move on (and complain).

    Advice to Management

Focus on employee growth and team building.

    I worked at Fry full-time

    Pros

Impressive ecommerce platform. Excellent place for developers to work. Work with very prestigious clients and brands.

    Cons

Micros took over and so the original Fry culture gone. Huge eccomerce brain drain has occurred. Long term viability is questionable.

    Advice to Management

Integrate the multichannel product suite and become more competitive in the marketplace.

    Pros

The organization is flat, work environment is friendly and casual. Compensation is good and the nature of work allows plenty of room for creativity.

    Cons

Flat organization means lesser opportunity to get big promotions and climb the corporate ladder. Some times, unrealistic deadlines communicated to the customer.

    Advice to Management

The management needs to do a better job with Accounts and setting client expectations. Management also needs to put a greater focus on product rather than just delivery.

    Cons

Not many people work at this location so less socializing with co-workers

    Advice to Management

Keep increasing people and projects in SF location :)

    Pros

As a senior software engineer, Fry has provided me with many opportunities to work large e-commerce clients and continue to learn new technologies. The work is very challenging and interesting. Management is also very understanding and fair.

    Cons

Since Fry is a small company with only a few locations, there are not many opportunities to grow into senior management positions.
