Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Do Not Even go to the Interview

Aug 4, 2015 - Operations Director in El Segundo, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are none. There are no pros to this job really as there are holes in every aspect of the company. If you do work there, take advantage of all the stupid free gimmicks they give you. That's essentially all you get.

    Cons

There is no PTO, they entice you at your interview with the possibility of growth, opportunities like a 'possible' stake in the Co., and the glamor of an IPO. ALL of which will not happen. The negative reviews are scary accurate and while I want to say some of the positive reviews could be the only glimmers of Fuhu, they could be dressed up, forced posts orchestrated by management. While I worked many long days, I was never a sucker and never had anything held over my head, so if they wanted to terminate me for leaving early, I was definitely ready. I was not going to get termed but at least I was able to come and go reasonably; average more closer to when managers arrive and leave. The management team, wow, was probably picked from a B-team set of college/professional firm dropouts. The president trances around looking for things to do while management runs around looking for things to do and everyone else is holding down the fort. They fire many people, talk down to you/about you in meetings, managers will not accept/own their failures and blame others when it is their fault. The lack of transparency, communication, integrity, and lack of respect for the employees make this place a diminishing work environment. Large percentage of employees are contractors who are bitter because they didn't get paid. Controls not established, so mass confusion all the time. Just over-demanding. After working there for a while I realized I was only going to be stagnant at my current position or I would leave (later doing the latter). Since I have left I have never looked back like most do. Please heed the warnings and just go work elsewhere, seriously.

Don't be a contractor. Excellent product. Needs to be more employee-focused.

    Pros

An amazing product. An amazing product. I cannot stress that enough. But how they get that product is sad, strange, and a bit inhumane.

    Cons

If you are contractor you are physically, emotionally, and psychologically distanced from full-time staff. You don't get a nice office. You are in a large, undecorated, open space. Fuhu just hired lots of new contractors so now space is limited in a kitchen that can hardly fit 10 people. People share lockers too now. Management is totally in constant miscommunication. People tell your superior and the superior tells you, even though you are the one who has to solve the problem. Having them come straight to you is much more efficient.

    Former Employee Speaking Out

    Apr 25, 2014 -

    Business Outlook

    Pros

A few good coworkers and free drink and food in the kitchen.

    Cons

I worked at Fuhu for 2+ years and here's my experience: Company Culture The Fuhu culture is like the mafia.  The head of the mafia is Robb Fujioka, Don Corleone if you will with out the charisma nor the wisdom.  Robb is the nucleus of Fuhu and is surrounded by his goons, A.K.A partners/managers.  As an employee of Fuhu, you are either in the inner circle where you have protection and privilege or you are not and be subjected to disrespect and arrogance from the managers. Common employees are told to be obedient and submissive.  If you are a yes-man, you will flourish at Fuhu, however, if you challenge the inner circle's thinking or decision, you'll be dealt harshly: reprimand from the manager, reprimand from the manager and Robb, or termination of employment. As a result, the atmosphere of the company is gloomy and fearful.  It's no wonder the turn-over rate at Fuhu is extremely high and worker satisfaction is extremely low. The Work Working hour is long and the pay is relatively low.  Average day of work starts at 9AM and ends... There's no overtime pay even tho employees need to clock-in in the morning, clock in/out for lunch, and clock out when the day ends. Paid time off is abstract because you have unlimited vacation days; after two years, you'll equate unlimited vacation to no vacation. Nothing is scheduled at Fuhu.  When Robb has an idea, a project starts.  No project planning, no sprint planning, no resource planning, no nothing.  However, there's always an unrealistic deadline that gets pushed back as you go. There are project managers (coordinators) for each department.  Tech team has a few, creative team has a few.  All the project managers manages in silos and completely uncoordinated with the rest of the company.  As a result, no one knows what's going on and where the project is at. Because there's no project planning, every once in awhile, Robb will have new ideas he wants to inject into the project.  As it's very common that the project you started is not the project you are working on a month later. The Management Robb micro-manages everything: from what product to do to what color an icon to use to who should clean up the coffee stains in the carpet.  Robb needs to micro-manage everything because he has a group of loyal yet incompetent managers. These managers have no management experience, they are promoted managers because they do what Robb asks.  Fuhu managers lack professionalism where they resolve conflicts by going to Robb instead of working things out.  Fuhu managers lack leadership because the way they persuade you to do something is by telling you 'Robb wants it this way.'  Fuhu managers lackmanagers lackmanagers lack integrity because they will always find an escape goat to get them out of trouble.  Basically Fuhu lacks management. Business Ethics What ethics?  This firm lacks ethics. Employees are encouraged to find competitor products and 'just re-skin it'.   Nothing in Fuhu product line is unique, all of them are copy cat products Fuhu ripped from competitors. Fuhu's business ethic is so bad that they instructed the managers to write false 5 stars reviews on Glass Door trying to bury the negative reviews and skew the overall company rating.  How do I know?  Fuhu had a consistent low rating of 1.8 stars for 2+ years, and then, in the course of a few days, a flood of 5-star reviews came in rising the rating to almost 4 stars. Despicable action that's inline with Fuhu's culture. In Conclusion I've worked at start-ups and fortune 500 companies and never have I experience a company as indifferent to their employees well-being as Fuhu.  My experience at Fuhu taught me how spot bad companies in the future. !!AVOID FUHU AT ALL COSTS!!

    Pros

The company is great about taking entry level employees and giving them an opportunity to learn on the fly and make what they want of their experience at Fuhu. People that want to learn new skills and challenge themselves will do well here.

    Cons

They will often add more responsibilities to your role but no additional income is even brought up.

Unless you need visa sponsorship, do not stay in this abusive relationship

Jan 15, 2014 - Illustrator in El Segundo, CA

    Pros

I would like to thank Fuhu for giving me a new-found appreciation for the real life. The day that I left Fuhu was the best day of my entire life. My friends and family were jubilant and congratulated me. As soon as I walked out of the 909 Sepulveda building for the last time, I saw trees of green, red roses too; skies of blue, clouds of white, and I thought to myself: what a wonderful world it is going to be without Fuhu, Inc!!!

    Cons

I've never been in an abusive relationship, but Fuhu, Inc. had allowed me to second-handily experience how it must be like! It was truly eye-opening! I googled 'signs of an abusive relationship' and what came up had striking similarities to what a typical Fuhu employee goes through on a daily basis: * Emotional Abuse (name calling, criticizing, “joking” in a demeaning or embarrassing way): when the president gets mad, you can hear him roar. The roaring of the F-words echoes through upper-management's walkie talkies and sends chills down the spines of the managers, who hail to the president as the almighty savior to their uninspiring careers. The managers then pass down the anger by berating their employees in an unprofessional manner. Meetings are called in order to humiliate the poor scapegoats. Criticisms are not constructive as they generally focus on personal attacks instead of professional development *Intimidation (uses threats, looks or gestures to scare partner): The Emperor of Fuhu walks by with his posse and the hall way is suddenly silenced. With a simple gesture, another soldier falls and his desk emptied. Fear tactic is used as the number 1 weapon to control employees. No job security whatsoever as people are constantly fired without warning. I have literally seen people shaking in the bathroom after talking to a director. *Isolation (control what partner does, sees, goes): Who needs a real family when you can be a part of this Fuhu family?!Because you love Fuhu, you stay close to the company to work on holidays instead of going home to your family. Who needs friends when you must work 10 hours/day and go to mandatory socials after work ends at 7PM? You will be told how to dress, how to act, and even how to talk. You will also be told who you should befriend within the company, and be asked to spy on your teammates and report signs of disloyalty to the managers. Let managers give you a total makeover so you can be crowned Miss Fuhu, Model Employee. *Denies Responsibility (blames partner for emotions and behavior): What?! Nah! There is no way upper-managers throw their employees under the bus for their mess-ups because Fuhu’s management team is absolutely perfect! As you can see, Fuhu, Inc. has no bad reviews on Glassdoor, look at all the glowing 5 star reviews written by various happy employees! (BTW, these happy employees must be ninjas because they could not be seen at the office) *Uses Children (threatens to take them away from the partner): the biggest irony is that the company produces tablets for children, but those working at Fuhu will never have time to see their children *Financial Control: Fuhu would like to make sure that you know you are worthless and therefore should never ever ask for ridiculous things such as: a vacation, or even worse, a raise…or, *gasp* a promotion!! Asking for these things shows that you are a horrible person so you might as well go fire yourself right now.

    Pros

If you have a thick skin and low self esteem there are limitless opportunities to advance at fuhu - just do what you're told, avoid random acts of firing, ceaselessly inform on your colleagues, and buy into the delusions. Also, there is a ball pit.

    Cons

Culture of narcissism that is based on an over-inflated sense of self-importance seriously hinders the company's capacity to compete. An "if you build it they will come" business strategy that's crossed with a direct mail "send and see what sticks" philosophy. Way too much red everywhere because "brand." Sophmoric management and leadership that neither inspires nor fosters execution. You're not allowed to play in the ball pit during office hours.

Submissive Employees Only. Professionals Stay Away!!

    Pros

You learn how to avoid such companies in the future

    Cons

If you're not submissive, you won't survive. Managers are horrible and obey anything the president says without question. Their latest INC 500 marketing stunt is a joke. They actually admit that working at Fuhu is very difficult, working hours are long (useless long hours). You'll sacrifice your family time, work like a slave with incompetent managers, no bonus, no vacation, below industry standards pay, and maybe, MAYBE you'll become a partner... what a joke. They made over 100000% revenue growth in the 3 years and no bonuses or increase in compensation for employees. You work 12 hour days... if not, you're branded as 'not commited' and eventually get fired. This place is terrible in many ways, The turnover rate is ridiculously high. PLEASE STAY AWAY!!

    Pros

The pay was good. Enjoyed hearing from store associates, they appreciated Fuhu reps coming in and giving them individual training. I was proud to represent a product, that I know is the best tablet for children and parents in its class.

    Cons

Always changing directives in the middle of an execution, while walking on a tight rope without a net.

"Hardest working management" HA! What a tool.

    Pros

Co-workers. Without them, I would've ditched the place years ago. No amount of free snack would've gotten me to stay for so long.

    Cons

Whoever wrote that gem must be... 1. One of the many incompetent managers working at Fuhu trying to move up in an already failing business. 2. Brainwashed. I guess this falls in with number 1. Seriously? It's not them but just bitter ex-employees? That 'review' tells you what kind of company Fuhu is. They are oblivious to their own mistakes and like to throw employees under the bus. It is never their fault. What a joke this place has become.
