I worked at Fund for the Public Interest full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I loved the people I worked with in the office! I actually met my best friend here. Lots of room to grow in the office and there IS an effort to be encouraging. Role-plays are definitely worth doing. They do give health insurance to SOME full time employees but you have to ask for it repeatedly.

    Cons

Oh where to start: The money doesn't go to where you think it does. Mostly to salaries but not yours. You work long hours for very little compensation (the high hourly rates they advertise are because they factor in your supposed commission pay). You are required to work full time in the summer. Limited breaks and required to stand in inclement weather under the guise of "Justice Never Sleeps". Spit on and called slurs...

I worked at Fund for the Public Interest full-time for less than a year

      Pros

When you have campaign victories, you really feel like you've made a difference and all your hard work and extremely long hours have paid off. Ability to manage a team of staff at a young age is great experience and they have a great training program.

      Cons

The Fund prides itself into putting most of its funds towards its causes but that also means a very small paycheck for Canvass Directors, especially after taxes. It is not an affordable salary, especially in a city like Washington D.C. The job and the passion of leadership dictates how the office runs, and when you don't have good leadership it becomes unenjoyable to make the difference you're trying to make even if you...

I worked at Fund for the Public Interest full-time

        Pros

Great campaigns, fun, young and passionate workforce that has can foster a wonderful and supportive community

        Cons

If the management is at all cold, vindictive, or or insecure, the office runs the risk of a toxic environment with high turnover.

        Advice to Management

Make sure your directors are at least somewhat experienced and have attended the national conference. Campus directors make the best summer office directors

I worked at Fund for the Public Interest full-time for less than a year

        Pros

Work with people who are passionate about important issues. They will hire literally anyone.

        Cons

Overwhelming pressure to meet quota. No job stability. They can let you go after just 2 weeks of not meeting quota. Encouraged by directors to mislead the public in an effort to get them to donate money to a cause.

        Advice to Management

Be more transparent. Treat people like people.

        Cons

when you crunch the numbers you're making less than minimum wage if you work a 65 hour week like they expect you to. this org takes advantage of recent college graduates who don't expect any type of work/life balance because they're fresh out of academia suspicious organizational structure and impact. you're gonna be switching campaigns almost monthly and while national claims they're doing altruistic work you don't...
