    Teaching as it should be

Sep 2, 2022 - Assistant Director in Atlanta, GA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Fusion allows teachers to run their classes without the drawbacks of traditional environments. Each Fusion campus is different in its own way but focus around a sense of community and culture; inclusion and diversity help make each campus their own! Support from administration and veteran staff helps new teachers find rhythms for their responsibilities in their role; I was blown away that I was compensated for my planning time as compared to public school.

    Cons

Not a con per say but there does take a learning curve to differentiate instruction for each student. Thankfully, the education team has backwards designed course frameworks to assist in this!

Good For A While Teaching Position

    Jul 7, 2022 - Teacher/Mentor

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The staff are incredible. It's all about the students and catering to their needs. The culture is obsessed with making a positive difference in our students lives. We provide excellent course options and creative facilities most students in traditional schools dream of.

    Cons

The company underwent a number of acquisitions during my time there. The company culture changed. Unfortunately, not for the better. It still is a nurturing, supportive environment but even students notice something is different. This is a good job if you just completed undergrad, are between careers, in retirement, or have a significant other you live with because the pay isn't the greatest. Summers are financially difficult. If you want to make a living, you will need to apply for an upper level position. I've met the CEO and COO. Great, great, group of guys who want to make a difference. But at times one is left wondering if they could do a better job of creating a venue where staff feel comfortable sharing what's on their minds and getting better information from local staff before large scale decisions impacting the company.

Not a real part-time job, tons of unpaid labor

    Nov 3, 2022 - Teacher/Mentor

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The company culture is amazing. I love my coworkers, supervisors, and the educational model is fantastic. Working from home is always great.

    Cons

You are only given 10 minutes of planning time per class, yet they expect you to highly customize everything for the student. Every teacher I've spoken with says they do hours of unpaid labor outside of those measly 10 minutes. You are also not paid for any admin time, grading papers, etc. 10 minutes per class and that's it. The hours are extremely sparse and your schedule is completely unpredictable. It's common for teachers to be getting paid for less than 5 hours a week. Yet the job takes up so much more time than that.

    Great Opportunity for Beginner Teachers

    Jul 7, 2022 - STEM Teacher/Mentor in Chicago, IL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    • An astoundingly supportive work environment – the administration at the Lincoln Park campus made my onboarding and transition into full-time super smooth! • Great flexibility in scheduling – PTO, classes you'd like to teach, etc. • The chance to make a meaningful impact on students, most of whom were failed or neglected by their previous education system • Plenty of resources for STEM teachers to help facilitate lesson planning – from access to eTextbooks, homework modules, and pacing recommendations • 1-on-1 teaching allows for teachers to plan lessons around a student’s individual ability and pacing, this is extremely helpful in regards to difficult mathematical topics! • Administration sets up times for Professional Development for various topics such as how to best help students with various behavioral disorders – huge help for me as a 1st year teacher!

    Cons

    • From the emotional drainage of working 1-to-1 with students full-time to the personalized lesson planning, it can sometimes be a lot of work • From the perspective of a 1st year teacher, learning to teach kids of all sorts of backgrounds (from wide gaps in education to behavioral disorders) is a heavy responsibility that may require asking for help from other teachers or administration (fortunately though, there is always someone there to help!) • Allotted paid planning time (10min per class) can be a hit or miss – while some students are exceptional in their education and don’t require much planning ahead, others may require more dedicated time to plan lessons for • Since Fusion Academy is open enrollment for students, the summer time can make it difficult to find hours

    We are paid very poorly

    Oct 3, 2022 - Teacher/Mentor
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great community, mostly amazing students, course customization, and lots of cool subjects that aren’t normally offered in regular schools.

    Cons

I crunched the numbers and teachers make less than 1/6th of what parents pay for each class….. we, the ones doing the work, grading the papers, and teaching the class take home a minuscule amount of what is being paid. It’s laughably bad. The money sounds good until you realize you are expected to do a large amount of your work on your own time and unpaid. You have to request paid planning, which doesn’t always get approved. Admin fully expects tailored and customized courses for each student to be completed outside of school hours since you only get ten minutes of paid planning per hour long class.

    Good people, not enough resources

    Pros

Coworkers and admin team are super supportive. The work culture is fantastic. Tough job but many opportunities for growth. You get to design your own lessons the way you want.

    Cons

The corporate is extremely inconsiderate and does not provide enough resources for teachers. PTO and paid lesson planning time are pathetic. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine what kind of person/people can make such horrible policies and decisions.

    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Flexible schedule -Flexible curriculum -Do not need to submit lesson plans -Students are great -1:1 classroom results in a deeper level of learning -1:1 classroom results in a strong sense of purpose as you closely monitor student progress -Freedom to customize courses to fit students' needs -Great co-workers -Supportive staff -Great opportunities for student enrichment Overall, you can tell that many people here care about providing a meaningful education. The environment is accepting and supportive.

    Cons

-Poverty wages -Inconsistent hours -Little paid time for planning The school could be such an ideal place to work if we were paid for our efforts and knowledge. It's so tough when you love the students and love what you do but cannot eke out a living. You might just diminish your savings while trying to work here.
