    I worked at FutureAdvisor full-time

    Pros

The people at FutureAdvisor, including the founders, are incredibly talented, kind, open-collaborators. Seriously great team of contributors! There is a legitimately flat organizational structure, where people's opinions are valued and heard.

    Cons

Change, as a result of a corporate acquisition, is challenging for any organization

    Advice to Management

It's the founders' strong ethics and values that grew FutureAdvisor into such an incredible organization. Maintain the culture you built!

I have been working at FutureAdvisor full-time

    Pros

The engineering team is pretty small but gets a lot of features done. We are very agile and release code daily. Everyone works on important features since we just don't have time for anything else. The company as a whole is pretty nimble and has lots of smart and passionate people. If you want to learn more about personal finance or investing, just chat with one of our financial advisors.
FutureAdvisor was recently acquired by BlackRock. A lot of us were apprehensive about this, since we signed up to work for a startup, not a mega corp. Bo promised that we will stay independent and nothing will change, and so far, that's mostly been true, but I'm not sure if we can continue to be independent indefinitely. For now at least, I'm happy with the salary bump, 401k matching, and promise of performance bonus $ in lieu of stock options upside.
The new B2B initiatives are pretty exciting and can significantly increase our customer base, especially with BlackRock backing us.

    Cons

We are experiencing all sorts of growing pains. From running out of office space to teams not communicating with each other. Gone are the days when you can find one person who knows every detail on a project.
The B2B initiative will definitely produce some unsexy work on the engineering side.

    Advice to Management

Stay nimble. Make sure every new hire is needed to do important work, because it's hard to stay nimble if headcount explodes. Don't let BlackRock slow us down.
Carefully manage growth. Make sure teams are communicating with each other and don't have different priorities. Keep the hiring bar high.
Move to a larger office ASAP.

    Pros

    - working with very intelligent, hard working people everyday
    - meaningful work - towards a common financial goal that people believe in
    - good leadership
    - very friendly and comfortable office vibe - dogs, food, good vacation policy
    - very team oriented
    - growing quickly and fast paced

    Cons

Nothing major. You put in a lot of work, but you see it pay off, and are working side by side with great people.

    Advice to Management

Keep inspiring all of your employees with what you do and your open communication.

The group of people working at FutureAdvisor is dynamic, intelligent, and a lot of fun. Made a great choice to join this team and help them scale.

    Cons

There are only 3 days of catered lunch and not 5 :(

I have been working at FutureAdvisor full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Joined several months back and am realizing how much the company has already grown since then. The company continues to grow month over month, with new products and features frequently being added to our product. As an employee, this means plenty of opportunities to grow -- there are as many challenges as you'd like to take on. And the team is great -- down-to-earth, bright, hardworking people, and there's not a single soul on the wider team who I don't get along with (and I'm not usually one to feel like that!)

    Cons

As with any startup, things change quickly and roles aren't etched in stone. So, it's good to be a self-starter and keep yourself on your toes.

    Advice to Management

I love management's no-nonsense style, which makes me feel more secure about both mine and the company's future. All input is valued, and while leadership spends intelligently on the business where it's needed, they've so far avoided spending on silly startup things like designer office furniture and expensive tech gear (e.g. segways or fancy office chairs) for the founders just because. I love the scrappy, all-voices-matter environment!

    Pros

Free food, often catered meals, open office, people who care about what they are doing, leaders who tell you what's going on

    Cons

Open office, as a startup sometimes they sometimes lose focus

I have been working at FutureAdvisor full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great, interesting, problems to solve. Lots of work to do but you can see the impact of what you do. Employees care about the company, product and mission to help people with their finances.

    Cons

Nothing blatantly wrong, since we are scaling fast I am sure there will be bumps in the road. But that is how startups are.

    Advice to Management

Keep the team focused and make sure the long term mission is maintained.
