    I worked at G & W Electric Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay is good, benefits are there. Growth is based upon management politics.

    Cons

No life work balance, HR does not properly resolve issues promptly when brought up. Some Managers and Supervisors do not care nor address employee concerns as they should. This company have good employees but they overlook them. So much favoritism as where as not all follow the handbooks. Many people that are not considered favored or butt kissers are basically put on thed hot seat. They throwing so much to try and correct product flow but not recognizing the flow actually comes from the people at hand. Lots of finger pointing at the wrong individuals.

    Advice to Management

Unfavorable trust with continued poor management will lead to more decrease on productivity, poor output, and many returns!

    I worked at G & W Electric Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good environment for young engineers to get their feet wet in a hands-on manufacturing company, as long as they understand the 1960s corporate culture.

    Cons

No clear strategy or alignment across the company, top management changing direction almost every year. Ownership continues to bring in perceived outside talent with larger company experience and lets them run rampant with promised changes that don't materialize, then make changes - over and over again. Overhead staffing levels and costs have increased by more than 40% in the past three years, notably HR and Marketing staffs more than doubled, yet company productivity and profitability has decreased. Volatile management/supervisor level environment - nearly 100% turnover of ALL Directors within the company during the past five years. Many strong employees have left or been pushed out by changing flavor of the day/"what have you done for me lately?" mentality.

    Advice to Management

Please wake up and get rid of the blind trust of certain management and Staff.

    I worked at G & W Electric Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are great. Owner is a great visionary who has passion for the company.

    Cons

Upper management is home grown. "flavor of the month" agendas with no commitment to staying the course for long term goals
If you are liked you will do well but once you are on the "list" there is no getting off. Very political.
Owner needs to become more involved as company has declined since he has taken a step back

    Advice to Management

Get senior management training, they spend to much time pointing fingers and working through their own agendas to save themselves.
Its like watching episodes of survivor.

    "Mechanical engineers are data pushers"

Former Employee - Mechanical Engineer in Alsip, IL
Former Employee - Mechanical Engineer in Alsip, IL
    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Support from other engineers, when they find time (everyone is super busy)
Database makes new designs a little simpler
Reviews are done on every project to ensure nothing is missed
drawing database organized and somewhat easy to access parts you need

    Cons

Management is super cheap. They will paint rusty office furniture to keep from buying new stuff. They also took away award pizza lunches even though engineering staff gives dozens of free overtime every week. They also charge employees for coffee, which is unheard of from any company. Seriously, who doesn't supply that for their employees??
your always behind on projects because engineer staff can't possibly keep up with workload
Your expected to come in on saturdays at least once a month (no choice)
Some of the senior staff on the shop floor know what they're doing, but there is a lot of unskilled labor that requires help from engineering staff on a regular basis when they should be spending time getting projects out

    Advice to Management

Someone needs to go into the bottom depths of day to day operations and realize the way they are going things doesn't work, and that most of the engineering staff is really unhappy (though it seems like everyone puts up with it rather than finding work elsewhere)

    Pros

The company is growing by leaps and bounds and has since moved to a new location. There are many any opportunities to grow and develop.

    Cons

I was a female working in a mainly male industry. Every time I entered the plant, I felt 500 pairs of eyes following my every move. Another employee verbally intimidated me in the parking lot at work while I was walking to my car. I felt very uncomfortable there and would mot choose to go back.
