I have been working at GAF (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful office, great coworkers, good location, gym on-site, good cafeteria, good 401k

    Cons

HR is the pits! Managers motivated by personal profit rather than corporate welfare or project outcome. Lots of contractors who come and go - can't they ever hire anyone already? Morale is abysmal. Resources are scarce. And did I mention that HR couldn't possibly care less about you and your concerns?

    Advice to Management

Hire employees in the first place, or hire the good contractors, so we get some permanence around here. Review managers more based on project outcome in terms of quality, not just $$. And for heavens' sake, please replace your lousy HR Department!

I worked at GAF full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, even though they raised the premiums yearly so the company wouldn't have to take the brunt of the inflation.

    Cons

Poor management that micromanaged. Slow corporate response time for any project.

    Advice to Management

Play a positive, active role to help build up employees rather than tear them down.

    Advice to Management

Give the regular people a chance.

I have been working at GAF full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation is very good they also have good products for their customers with contractor programs and the marketing they do.

    Cons

Managment is not good and divides the peers that work together. They are not committed to their employees and constantly getting rid of good quality people every year and you will have the threat that you are next.

    Pros

Very good pay. Good people, and a friendly working environment

    Cons

Working around hot asphalt, gravel, sand, and dust, no A/C or heat isn't for everybody. I was OK with it. Also, very long hours and 7-day workweeks for extended periods.

    Advice to Management

Keep taking good care of your people. It means a lot, and you've done well.

    Pros

Good culture, heavy emphasis on work-life balance, solid benefits and 401k plan. Fairly relaxed dress code (no jackets/ties).

    Cons

Roofing industry not the most riveting space to work in, innovation is not at the forefront of the company's priorities.

    Advice to Management

Place a higher emphasis on innovation, develop a structured rotational program for summer analysts or recent graduates so they can build a broad base of knowledge.

    Pros

Good benefits with matching 401k. Weekly pay. Good starting pay. Pay increases yearly, but are low low. Takes a long time to make money.

    Cons

No room for advancement. Managers don't care about their employees only numbers. Favoritism within the department and only those employees will move up or out of the department.

I worked at GAF full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits were very good. The company was growing and developing new products within the roofing line as well as accessory items and vendor items. This is the best environment for someone who really likes to sell, since you are constantly being given new items to talk about and find markets for.

    Cons

Within management the inside politics were brutal. The pay differential between Field Sales Mgr and Territory Manager did not justify the pressure. In my opinion, the Territory Manager is the best position in the company. As a "Manager" there was no formal training given or mentoring within the organization. It was more or less sink or swim.

    Advice to Management

Lose the "Good old boys club" mentality and recognize the "Value" of differences in people to properly leverage their territories and jobs, regardless of whether they Think "Like You" or not.
