    Pros

Good benefits. Good people to work with for the most part. Very safety orenitated seem genuinely concerned that no employees are injured at work.

    Cons

Always looking for employees mistakes. The sole purpose of the managers visit is to search for mistakes made by the employees. There is no positive reinforcement. Makes it difficult to enjoy going to work. They use check lists to try and make sure foreman and workers are doing there jobs. You are always watching your back wondering what you will be written up for next.
Wages are nowhere near where they need to be for what they expect. High turnover of employees.

    Advice to Management

Quit micro managing allow your employees to do their jobs. Increase wages

    Pros

Good work hours, great location, no micro managing

    Cons

People who've worked for the company for years are passed by on new job opportunities which are given to new employees, There is no room for advancement unless you know someone.

    Advice to Management

Stop overlooking those employees who have been loyal, dedicated and been with the company long term and give them opportunity to advance in the company.

I worked at GATX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Company had good benefits, and has bonus annually. They have been managing the business great for many years.

    Cons

They have continue to change there operations management to improve the business so if you like continuous improvement this maybe the place for you. They are not the company they once where, no carrying for your employees any more. They are losing there customer service value. The cost of there overhead is going up more then what they are producing.

    Advice to Management

You always charged a premium for you railcar leases based on the service you provided. I think once your service is no longer there so will the 99% utilization will no longer be there in the future.

"Very nice people to work with but poor management of projects and chaotic work environment"

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at GATX as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

-People are very nice and friendly to work with
-Good work hours 9 to 5

    Cons

-Minimal to lack of definition and management of project scope, resulting in a chaotic work environment, inefficient use of resources, and issues that occur later
-When there is one large project for the company, all other projects suffer due to limited resources
-"Band-aid" IT solutions are in place instead of investing extra time and money to implement solutions that address both short and long term needs
-Unless it is an enterprise wide project, Directors are made project managers who spend very little time actually managing the project
-Enterprise data warehouse is not widely used and there is limited support to expand.
    -Inexperienced people in middle management

    Advice to Management

-Do a better job managing the project pipeline and changes to the pipeline through the year.
--->Implement and enforce a process to handle projects requested by the business that were not on the approved list for the year.
--->When unplanned projects are accepted, revisit/revise list of projects for the year and/or increase staff/consultants accordingly.
-Put trained and experienced people in project management positions, not just making a side job for a Director.
-Make project managers accountable - Measure them on project budget vs actuals (this should give more incentive to manage scope)
-Make sure people are well trained to handle new roles - especially when new to middle management.

    Pros

Stable organization. If your goal is to find a "job" and make a decent living, this organization may suit you well. Top executives of this organizationis ultra conservative and do not take unnecessary risks.

    Cons

Stagnant organization. You will not be technically nor academically challenged. For the most part, you do the same thing over and over again. You would be surrounded by whole bunch of uneducated people who are trying to maintain status quo and get ahead at the expense of other people. Good old boy organization. Do a search on top executives and see if any diversity exists in this organization.

    Advice to Management

Where is the growth on this organization? Please review your own 20 year chart of your own stock and perform a self assesment.

    Pros

The integrity of a weld bead ... is more important to them than the integrity of a human being ... I will add they are quite proficient in guidelines, calibrations, forms and all the paperwork that goes with the job ... I always said , if gatx ran the government , we'd have this deficit down real quick ... checks and balances ...

    Cons

There is not much heart and soul there ... The operational outfits are looked at as less than human and if you try to help the company out by letting them know where things are going down the tubes ,you are shown the door after all the spin doctoring and cover ups are installed ....

    Advice to Management

Dont judge a man, woman or situation until you have all of the facts ... doing so without that needed info is called prejudice ... Clean house or promote from inside if you can with the Human Resources Department ... They are on cruise control with providing needed assistance when needed by an employee .... no follow through seems to be the main problem ...
