I worked at GE Aviation as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Managers give interns duties to manage aspects of production and take charge of important processes, giving an enormous level of importance to interns at the site (mine site was Cardiff). At the same time, a high level of independence is also given to be able to analyse data, scope and manage your own projects and mould the role to what you want it to be. Learning from mistakes is an important part of the job. The people there are mostly very easy to talk to and its easy to develop working relationships and enjoy a good working atmosphere.

    Cons

The job for some is largely non-technical and involves mainly just initiative and organisation skills. A background in engineering helps but is not essential. Culture amongst Cardiff site is unique - the relationship between management and Aircraft Engineers is a little tense, and politics may limit some of the projects you try to implement. The quality of your internship varies vastly depending on the manager you get - I was lucky to have several very good managers who gave me duties and had a place for me, while others had managers who had no use for interns.

    Advice to Management

Have an idea of where your intern could be useful.

I worked at GE Aviation (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work, I was given a lot of responsibility from day 1. The training provided was extremely useful and was accessible all year round. Extra curricular activities were organised regularly to aid networking. The benefits are fantastic, even for an intern.

    Cons

The job prospects as an intern are slightly frustrating as after a year of working for the company, I still had to apply to the graduate scheme. I would think that a year is long enough to see if someone is a good fit.

    Advice to Management

I felt there was sometimes a disconnect between the shop floor and the management. I think it would benefit the company if management listened more closely to the ideas that the shop floor had.
