I have been working at GE Aviation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has great leadership program opportunities for people who want to fast track their career. They have a good work-life balance and they have good benefits.

    Cons

Raises are small. Sites with unions prevent engineers from being hands on. Executives aren't always honest about their plans for the company, for example - unexpected layoffs.

I have been working at GE Aviation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good pay, Ok medical benefits

    Cons

Permissive time is a joke. You can only take it if permitted. Just know it will never be a good time as they are always behind schedule. Again going back to the deplorable management. 7days a week 12 - 16+ hrs a day for months at time. If you have no life, no kids or want a divorce, it is a perfect place to work.

    Advice to Management

Reward the front line managers. Don't use and abuse. Make sure they get time off. Working 7 days a week for months on end is not healthy for them or the company. Learn what lean manufacturing really means. It is supposed to be "just in time" , not always too late.

I worked at GE Aviation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great experience working in a manufacturing and development environment. Overall, a very good company to work for. The company provided the 400+ employees who were laid off a very generous severance package. Our team had a monthly off-site events to promote comradery.

    Cons

Senior leadership made some gross errors in negotiating a deal that allowed an investor to back out of a $400M deal. Leadership committed these funds and then had to find ways to make up this shortfall. As a result 400+ employees lost their jobs. I left the government contractor sector (and my high level security clearance) because GE told me that they had at least 10 years of work to keep the programs busy. My security clearance has lapsed and I cannot compete for these jobs any longer.

    Advice to Management

Please make better business decisions when it comes to funding projects.

I have been working at GE Aviation (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people who work at the company are great, the vast majority are willing to take the time out of their day to help you out and provide thorough explanations. The other main reason for working here is to be exposed, and to work on, some of the most advanced aircraft engines in the world.

    Cons

In supply chain, poor management is rampant, and dealing with the work environment that is inherent to having a unionized workforce that is not controlled can be difficult.

    Advice to Management

Work to improve union-management relations, and ensure communication channels with you employees are open

I worked at GE Aviation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

-Great work/life balance. Flexible starting/finishing hours. I commuted a long distance and it was beneficial to go into the office at 6:30am to beat traffic. Ability to work from home.
    -The work is challenging
-The product is interesting (jet engines) and the end use is interesting (fighter planes, helicopters)
-Lots of room for growth. There are many different groups to try a different skill set (stress analysis, heat transfer, mechanical design)
-Employee career growth is important to management. Assignments are tailored to your career plan.

    Cons

-As most business are doing the health care package is a high deductible type that doesn't cover very much except for check-ups.
-Large company with many levels of bureaucracy. Design changes can require many signatures.
    -Layoffs are very possible

    Advice to Management

There are many levels of management. Immediate managers of individual contributors do a great job working with employees, but upper management (corporate) is blind to the job at hand. Metrics can't quantify everything.

    Pros

Unlimited vacation time, have not had request denied yet. Work can be exciting if you're in the right program.

    Cons

Organizations are constantly being restructured. I work in Lynn, MA and suddenly report to someone in Ohio because they need a warm body. Working in the wrong program can leave you feeling stuck/stale.

    Advice to Management

Start focusing on how to make employees lives easier, sometimes the big up front expense is better than the short term cost savings.
