I worked at GE Aviation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing technology and problem solving. The opportunity to work with some of the most brilliant people I've ever met. Freedom and hands-off management.

    Cons

Recent budget cuts (under new VP) destroying the company. No money to test or develop new technology. Sustaining engineering being sent overseas. Recently no overtime, and after layoffs everyone is overworked and underpaid. They took all the fun out of it - it was my dream job, as well as others, and many of the best engineers have left or want to leave.

    Advice to Management

    Stand up to higher-ups.

I worked at GE Aviation as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Worked with a lot of great people, both interns and full time employees. Were given real responsibility on many projects which we were fully responsible for.

    Cons

While the work that we did have was meaningful and interesting, there were always large periods of time where there was not enough work for all the interns, which was terrible to deal with.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that there is a legitimate need for an intern before hiring them, since otherwise both the company and the intern will not be getting the full benefit from the internship that they should be.

I worked at GE Aviation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits were great, ok place to work most of the time.

    Cons

Being such a big company it seemed at times that they didn't necessarily care about their employees sometimes. Demanded that we work ridiculous hours, the only thing that mattered was getting the testing done.

Work on your own, PTO and vacations, OT optional

Overworked, required to have many extra job titles and skills without comp., people there are not friendly, drama

    Advice to Management

    Pros

OK pay. Good health & 401k benefits. Great education benefits. Flexible work schedule. Easy to move into other work areas.

    Cons

More than half of people I hired on with did not make it through the harsh 90 probation. Too many unnecessary meetings. Alcohol served at company events.

    Advice to Management

Put an end to drinking at company/teaming events.

I worked at GE Aviation as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

The company is huge and there are a lot of opportunities. They are moving towards a younger culture, but still need a lot of work. There are a lot of ways to network with other employees.

    Cons

Very competitive atmosphere and can be overwhelming. Sometimes hard to move from one area to the next. A large company and moves VERY slowly.

    Advice to Management

Speak more to the employees on an even base

I worked at GE Aviation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Formerly Smith's Aerospace, Grand Rapids, MI. State of the Art facility. Professional. Some very talented individuals in engineering, design, marketing and management. Excellent pay and benefits.

    Cons

Too many chiefs. Large number of "Directors" diluted focus on priorities. Infighting from unecessary competition, internally for visibility and resources..

    Advice to Management

Eliminate complications caused by trade regulations barriers created by International divide in design and manufacture of product for Aerospace. Consolidate or simplify (actually) non-applicable regulation.
