I worked at GEAR for Sports full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's great for people who don't really want to work with the public. They pretty much leave you alone to get your work done without someone hanging over your shoulder telling you what to do every few minutes. Paid holidays and vacation, and overtime available at certain times of the year. 3 shifts available, so great for antisocial night owls!

    Cons

The work can be tedious and monotonous. You do the same thing over and over all day long, and the sound of the machines whirring puts you to sleep.

    Advice to Management

An extra break would be nice, to let employees shake themselves awake after being lulled into a stupor by the machines.

I have been working at GEAR for Sports full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers and the management is pretty laid back. Facility is nice but outdated in some areas.

    Cons

Haven't had a raise in 2 years. I feel under appreciated, under paid, and under utilized. The entry level artist positions are very easy to work but while they say a 2 year degree will qualify you, it absolutely will not.

    Advice to Management

Stay relaxed! I feel like a micro management style is creeping into the culture. I know you can't control the pay since Hanes has really taken over but please please fight for us!

I worked at GEAR for Sports full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay & benefits, opportunity to work with and move into different departments

    Cons

Poor management styles, not a very friendly or team-oriented culture, feels like everyone is out to get everyone else or at least only looking after themselves; managers tend to micro-manage and expect you to work more than your scheduled hours

    Advice to Management

Try to understand that the way you have done things in the past does not always mean it is the best way, you have talented people on your teams who can contribute new ideas without threatening your position as manager

    Pros

This is a large company since they are owned by Hanes Brands Inc. They have plenty of room for advancement. If you are willing to pay quite a bit, the benefits are nice.

    Cons

The work environment is rough. The art support department hires people with college degrees but pays like they do not have them. Poor training causes a multitude of mistakes and time waste. The department's overall attitude is negative and is addressed in meetings. The fix by upper management is to tell employees to be more positive. They offer no incentives to make the work environment more positive. People leave on a regular basis. I've been in this department for a short period of time and have seen multiple people leave the department.

    Advice to Management

Pay more for college educated people. Organize training procedures and materials. Work to make the department an enjoyable place to be. Consider having employees evaluate the department anonymously and use the input to make the department better.

    Pros

The company is flexible. People are great to work with. Great location and work environment.

    Cons

Directions come from Hanes Brands and not enough information and knowledge is gained before they make directional changes.

I worked at GEAR for Sports full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great work/home-life balance. Everyone works extremely hard, but nice to see that family is important. Have made several long-lasting friendships.

    Cons

Upward mobility is limited and management positions don't open very often so you may get stuck if you're looking to grow with the company. Salaries are on the lower end of industry standard.

    Advice to Management

Find innovative ways to encourage current employees to stay!

I have been working at GEAR for Sports full-time

    Pros

Great people to work with. They also offer an employee discount sale on name brand apparel.

    Cons

The work schedule is work 4 hours; take a 10 minute break.. then you work another 2 hours and get a 30 minute paid lunch.

Sounds great, right? Well, the break and lunch are paid, so you are still on the clock, and it counts against your efficiency ratio. During the busy seasons, they 'suggest' only taking a small lunch and only using your break for the restroom. For a student, it's a decent source of income.. although you will be tired.

    Advice to Management

Get new model to work off of. Workers may unionize if not careful.
