    Pros

People that were not VP/Director level roles, personalities were really a pleasure to work with

    Cons

    - Lack of recognition for working 60 hours plus
    - FP&A Manager had no technical aspect or grasp of systems used in order to perform financial results to senior leadership
    - TOO Many Frito people... the "I'll hire you if you get a good job down the line" was ever present in the Finance department
    - Senior management was very stand offish, never related to people actually doing the work

    Advice to Management

Get a grip and realize that GENBAND is not as big as you think in the industry... stop spending money on Golf tournaments that do little or no good to the people that actual make the wheel go round... and finally... BORA BORA... really

I worked at GENBAND full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay was very good but that was carried over from Nortel
    Great working level people

    Cons

Moved from a 400 to 2200 employee company but did not change many of the processes so logic was to go figure it out yourself.
Work load was crazy with 70+ hour work weeks and was getting worse
Could not move the Network Transformation past the Tier 3 market with little competition

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and take action from the most experienced and not on market trends
    Try "Undercover Boss"

I worked at GENBAND full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lavish parties and vacations for senior management
Senior executives get lots of perks

    Cons

Company has never met its targets yet continues to lavish executives with perks
CEO is a nice person but incredibly arrogant and never misses an opportunity to self promote
The strategy for the company is to expand to drive growth and then slash quickly when that fails

    Advice to Management

When you are not hitting your targets cancel the Bora Bora trips and have your management meetings in a hotel conference room somewhere in Frisco
Stop pretending that you are the next big thing; Your business has shrunk every year for the past five years.. you just masked it with acquisitions.

    Pros

Great people at lower and mid-levels.

    Cons

Too much emphasis and growth at leadership level and no recognition of the lower and mid-level employees. There are a certain number of Performance Levels, so management has to decide who gets what level and meeting those numbers instead of giving what employees deserve. Also, the annual Executive Leadership trips are WAY too extravagant. The last trip was to Bora Bora, however, there is no consistent bonus for line employees. Unless you were part of the Nortel acquisition, the tenure of a normal employee is maximum 2 years. ALOT of turnover in the mid level arenas.

    Advice to Management

Get a grip about the actuality of the company concerning its direction and longevity. David Walsh has no committment to the company and will sell at the first possible opportunity.

    "Product strategy"

    Star Star Star Star Star
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at GENBAND full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Remote employment accepted and global team with many international teams. Some of the new employees are good apart from the inherited nortel team.

    Cons

Bully-style management across the board. Executive management team members don't respect one another and this causes lack of company direction and products are outdated and only hanging on to maintenance deals. Acquiring companies with outdated technology and merging it all isn't working.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to form a team that respects one another and employees. Stop throwing away money on executive expenses and unsuccessful marketing.

    Pros

Decent products and support. Global business. The further you are from the USA the better it is to work for.

    Cons

If you are not a friend of the CEO's and you are a senior person, don't even try it. The CEO, David Walsh, was part of Global Crossing when the feds nailed them for $245M in a class action law suit filed by investors. He seems to have brought this culture to Genband. Just do a search for Global Crossing litigation and you will see all of the ugly details.

    Advice to Management

Fire all the executives, blow away all of the unprofitable products and live within a much smaller budget.

Benefits cut on a regular basis
    No growth as an employee
CEO looking out for himself instead of Employees and Company
Lay offs on a regular basis

I could go on, but its just not worth it..... Stay away!!!!!

    Advice to Management

Learn to take care of the employees that actually do the work and quit looking out for yourselves and your bonuses

I worked at GENBAND full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Talented employees who are knowledgeable and loyal

    Cons

The management team is completely self serving and operates from month to month. If you work at Genband, you are aware of the frequent layoffs. If you are in sales, expect your objectives and compensation to be adjusted quarterly. If you don't enjoy job hunting, don't work for a company like Genband.

    Advice to Management

Take a longer term view of your business. Show loyalty to the hard working employees and talented engineers who have made you successful. Keep staffing lean and utilize contract employees where necessary to avoid the frequent layoffs that Genband is known for; the constant insecure work environment that you are creating is not only bad for moral, but makes hiring new talent difficult.

"Typical modern day IT Sweatshop, Brutal"

Former Employee - Software Development in Ottawa, ON (Canada)

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Pay and benefits and technical talent around you are positive. There are lots of great people trying to succeed at the lower levels.

    Cons

Sweatshop, extremely political environment. Very short sighted management team and direction. Direction and vision are unclear and therefore impossible to implement efficiently. Staff reductions are frequent and all management practices are "territorial" and guarded. There is no spirit of honest teamwork to all move in the same direction together. Management is old school fear based and nothing at all is progressive or innovative.

    Advice to Management

Your success will be directly tied to the positive motivation of the people that do the work. If you treat your employees great, they will do great work for you. There is no longer loyalty by default in this industry. You must engage and empower your employees in a positive manner. Get rid of old school fear based management philosophies and modernize your management team and style with professionals that know how to manage (not just whomever promoted to be managers and directors). Management and Leadership is a skill and talent that is sorely lacking at Genband.
