I worked at GENBAND (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Large pool of talented people. Great people to work with

    Cons

Very tough industry and GENBAND is not well positioned competitively. Small business size makes it hard to compete with some of the larger players.

I worked at GENBAND full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are still a good number of talented, committed, and very reliable folks on various GENBAND teams (who just run ragged until they burn out), and the company has (or at least had back when I was there), hosted a GENBAND day of service each year to the communities in which they operate - really great idea.

    Also, comp package was good.

    Cons

Despite the company attempting to reinvent itself, it is saddled with a significant legacy commitment, which continually pulls resources to the problem of the day, rather than thinking longer-term.

Also, there is a real issue in many parts with the "one neck to choke" culture hanging over many projects. Coupled with ridiculous constraints on projects, and a number of folks that simply refuse to acknowledge reality, this makes for a very challenging culture.

    Advice to Management

You have to take care of your people, and stop driving them like sled dogs - the relentless pressure, and complete inability to acknowledge when things go well, is a real killer for those that are truly committed to being the best they can be.

I worked at GENBAND (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Got to work from home some

    Cons

    Let me make a list.
Employees not treated well (Work/Life balances)
    No salary increases for years
Benefits cut on a regular basis
    No growth as an employee
CEO looking out for himself instead of Employees and Company
Lay offs on a regular basis

I could go on, but its just not worth it..... Stay away!!!!!

    Advice to Management

Learn to take care of the employees that actually do the work and quit looking out for yourselves and your bonuses

I have been working at GENBAND full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Large pool of talented people

    Cons

Making wrong strategic decisions, benefits leave a little to be desired but probably are average, sales leadership add no value.

    Advice to Management

dump the micro-managers and those with a rolodex of contacts older than the legacy equipment we're still trying to support. The control mindset is no longer relevant and will make the talent continue to leave.

I worked at GENBAND full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Loved the people I worked with in the office in Dallas, TX area. Learned a lot while I was there from some very smart, talented people.

    Cons

Very tough industry and GENBAND is not well positioned competitively. Small business size makes it hard to compete with some of the larger players.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in research & development to better compete in a product niche vs. spreading so thin across many different products.

Great Team Effort with in Marketing

    Cons

Laying off quite common and expected

    Advice to Management

Try to make use of the existing manpower and see the avenue for growth instead of laying off people, it gives a bad limelight to your company

I have been working at GENBAND full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for challenging work and projects.

Very clear link between daily work and product success.

Constant learning environment and ability to work with talented engineers.

    Cons

Too few resources and unrealistic project timelines.

Very little priority to work/life balance.

With so many talented engineers, managing egos is a daily exercise.

    Advice to Management

Focus on key business and knock that out of the park. You can't be everything to everyone and continue to deliver quality products. I've heard so many people looking for a new job in the past 6 months and always because of being over-stretched and never seeing the light at the end of the tunnel (over the course of several years). You can work in scramble mode for only so long before you begin to harm the productivity of your talent. That GENBAND has done as well as they have to date is a testament to the quality of the engineering teams. Take care of them or you'll lose them.

I worked at GENBAND full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent products and support. Global business. The further you are from the USA the better it is to work for.

    Cons

If you are not a friend of the CEO's and you are a senior person, don't even try it. The CEO, David Walsh, was part of Global Crossing when the feds nailed them for $245M in a class action law suit filed by investors. He seems to have brought this culture to Genband. Just do a search for Global Crossing litigation and you will see all of the ugly details.

    Advice to Management

Fire all the executives, blow away all of the unprofitable products and live within a much smaller budget.

Pay,Benefits and Friendships. Worklife balance was great. Flexible hours, with ability to work from home if needed.

    Cons

Business was not doing well therefore layoffs were always occurring. Communication from Leadership was poor.

    Advice to Management

Be upfront and honest with employees.
