I have been working at GFI Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Relaxed fun environment, reasonable flexibility and freedom with technologies that can be used in projects, few late nights, relaxed dress code

    Cons

Bad health benefits, no 401k match, after acquisition by BGC all IT was moved to a new location that isn't as nice as the previous one, feels crammed, no kitchen. Constant rumors of layoffs after the acquisition which causes stress

    Advice to Management

To new BGC management: don't be cheap about simple amenities. It has a huge effect on morale. Old, used up desks in the new office are ridiculous; designate a kitchen area with basic things like a fridge, microwave, a decent coffee machine. See GFI office for examples of how its done.

    Pros

If you have many client contacts, the pay is very competitive and better than some of the peer BDs you will encounter. The People & Work Environment are great. It is a fun place to work

    Cons

Research, Professional Development, Cross-Training/Exposure to multiple desks and products

    Advice to Management

More exposure & understanding traders have to other products the more knowledgeable they are when talking to their existing clients which could lead to cross selling or new GFI business across multiple desks

    Pros

Good benefits, perks and environment to work at. Great place to learn and have your first position and establish yourself.

    Cons

lots of traveling, none defined training so it depends on your manager if youll move up. The person that trains you might be a moron and you still have to listen to them.

    Advice to Management

have a better training program, 401k and more integration amongst employees. Also have the cleaning staff really clean the place.

    Pros

Work is challenging, and you are allowed to experiment with technology (within limits). Get to wear multiple hats during SDLC and found majority of the colleagues to be very technically competent. Overall great environment to work in.

    Cons

As with any other small company, opportunities to move up the corporate ladder are slim to nothing.

    Advice to Management

Should move away from flat structure, it's not working. I don't think upper management recognizes this fact. Team leads need to be specified explicitly and recognized, rather than hoping for someone to raise-up and take charge.

fast paced environment requires fast learning. great place to learn about people. office environment is fairly forgiving and open to teaching if necessary.

    Cons

constant sink or swim mentality can get exhausting, but you are recognized and rewarded. realities of the fx market.

    Advice to Management

honest, though not always fair. there's often clear favoritism but at least you're mostly open about it.
