- Growing platform with consistent track record across numerous funds and economic cycles - Scrappy, smart, and hard working group of investors who think and act like a team - Highly collegial work environment with strong focus on shared accountability - Humble, honest, and transparent communication both within the firm and with external parties (advisors, management teams, peers, and competitors alike) - Big focus on culture and professional development in service of long term career development
Cons
- The expectations are high here. Those who aren't driven by high expectations will find it really tough to work here - Fast paced environment. There's a pretty low tolerance for people who plan to coast or are used to hiding in big corporate environments (i-banks) - Team size is growing in concert with AUM growth. Will be important to maintain the small-firm feel (organizational efficiency, close camaraderie) as we continue to grow. Relatedly, office space is a little tight

Great People and Smart Investors
Nov 28, 2018 - Associate in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
GI has a great group of people that work well together to make smart investment decisions. The people here are not only intelligent and driven, but are also humble, respectful, genuine, and fun to be around. Every voice around the table is heard during meetings, and thoughtful alternative views are always encouraged and welcomed. The firm listens to constructive criticisms and is receptive to change.
Cons
Like most PE shops, GI is fast-paced and drives towards results. Can't say that work life balance is a particular strength because deal cycles can often be unpredictable. However, hard work is recognized, and credit is given where it's due.

Pros
I joined GI in 2014, starting as an associate. Over the four years that I have known GI, it has continuously been a great place to work and learn. The firm is also very willing to reflect and gather feedback for improvement areas - every year we have a strategic firm offsite and the business and culture changes that we discuss are taken seriously and implemented. - Great team that you'll learn a lot from: Like most investment firms, the speed with which you need to learn is rapid, but the team at GI has really embraced a coaching/apprenticeship mentality to help new team members get up to speed quickly. - Interesting, results-oriented work: All levels are asked to contribute meaningful work and senior leadeship is cognizant of being results-driven and focused. This helps limit the amount of "busy work" and keeps us focused on the right questions. - Commitment to diversity: The firm has been committed to building out a diverse team in terms of background, thought leadership, gender, ethnicity, race. Our current first year associate class is 50/50 male/female, we have several mid-level and senior women in our investment and operations teams, and we have a growing number of former consultants as well.
Cons
- This is true of any firm in the PE industry but you have to be ready to work longer hours (including weekends sometimes) when you're in the middle of a deal. Everyone on each deal team has a 'roll-up-you-sleeves' attitude and they pitch in during the busy times so you always feel like you're working as a team. GI isn't out of the norm but this is a general con for any investment firm that you have to be prepared for. - Culture in growing firm: GI has grown significantly over the last three years, which is great sign for the future of the firm, but can affect culture. We continue to have events and are always encouraged to build strong relationships with our co-workers but it can be hard to maintain a small-company atmosphere with a growing number of employees.
