Interesting place; some cultural challenges
Dec 12, 2012 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Extremely smart people - everyone here is bright. Lot of energy, young company, a lot of nice people. Company making lots of money, so stable for now - more cash than debt.
Cons
Slow decision-making (partly Japanese style, partly management's fault). Top-down management style. Growing pains - company has grown fast, systems and policies haven't always kept up.

Great Japanese culture. Smart people.

Old technology. Bad business model. Only Japanese.

All talk, very little action.

- Interesting and professional colleagues - Have a decent sized war chest - Good location
Cons
- Japanese top heavy management structure - Zero to none career ladder for foreign employees - Work/life balance (long hours)
- Current Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★

Struggling, less-than-innovative company that may not be around for much longer
Oct 3, 2014 - Anonymous Employee in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Some talented managers, above average salary and benefits, great office location in SOMA.
Cons
Equity grants (phantom shares, since company trades in Tokyo) are paltry and rapidly dwindling in value. Stock price has fallen by about 75% from its peak in late 2012. Gaming is a hit driven business, and GREE has done little (both in the US and Japan) to best position itself to innovate and create a top-10 title on its own. The company acquired 3 top-10 titles via the Funzio acquisition, but recent development efforts have centered around re-skinning existing titles and copying other successful games out in the market. Highly political organization. The people who present the best ideas and produce the best work are often not the ones who are recognized/rewarded/promoted. Major talent exodus. It feels like the smartest, most respected and most accomplished employees are leaving the company in droves. Japanese culture of treating employees as cogs in a machine rather than as long-term investments is very evident. Limited opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Bad corporate culture, extending from Japan HQ
Feb 20, 2013 - Engineer in TokyoRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Offices in Japan and US are in good locations. New phone purchase subsidy. Somewhat flexible work hours.
Cons
Bad lower and middle management. None Japanese employees are discriminated. Management by Intimidation is a norm. Dirty politics within. Don't believe the job description. Only way to go up the ranks is to step on your co-workers. Think twice before you take an offer and ask about the actual day to day work.

Pros
You can experience many new trials

Young company but still conservative Japanese culture

Japanese corporate culture struggling to find its footing in a global markets
Dec 6, 2012 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Fair and Competitive Compensation. Nice Work Locations. Popular and profitable among millions of simpleton feature phone users in Japan who think card battle retreads qualify as quality games.
Cons
Japanese corporate culture is excessively relied upon as a one size fits all solution for global markets. Rapid growth has cultivated layers of politically motivated middle management dysfunction. Whenever mistakes are made circumstances are reinterpreted to deny what happened. No concept of 'fail fast'. Opportunities to learn from failure are constantly squandered. Intelligent women are given fewer opportunities for advancement than more mediocre male counterparts.

Pros
Relationship between colleagues is very simple, and the company's japanese style management is approving.
Cons
Work-life balance is unsatisfying, usually work late to 10:pm at night. The company's revenue is disappointing recently.

High salary and long worktime
May 29, 2014 - Lead Software Engineer in TokyoRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I work at Tokyo office. Office environment is great. There are many super smart engineers to work with. Salary is high (bu it depends largely on salary of previous job).
Cons
Long work time (now it is getting shorter, it is still long). Work time is managed by using time card even for discretionary workers. Now limited opportunity to work in the US for Japanese employees.
