I worked at GSE Systems full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits and friendly, skilled engineers.

    Cons

Current management has destroyed the company. They claim to look at their last years numbers to show how great of a job they are doing. Numbers are easy to make look good when 1/4 of the company is laid off and another 1/4 leave voluntarily. Those numbers will only help for a short time.

Management bases their indication on how well the company is doing solely off their stock prices and not feedback from their employees or customers. Since GSE has "total transparency" go take a look into their stock symbol GVP to read all about their performance-restricted stock units and make your own decision on what their focus is.

    Advice to Management

Stop congratulating yourselves on a job well done when all of your key employees and customers are leaving you. Don't place the blame on former employees being disgruntled or old guard as YOU are the ones who destroyed the company and really are just that bad to work for.

    Pros

Management cares enough to post false positive comments on glassdoor.

    Cons

Management has to post false positive comments on glassdoor. I speak with current employees often and they all say that the downward spiral continues. One only needs to look at the extreme employee turnover rate for proof. The Board should look a little closer.

    Advice to Management

Replace yourselves with management that is competent, capable and considerate.

I have been working at GSE Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The work is interesting and varied. There are opportunities for travel to interesting power plants all over the world, but travel is generally limited so that it doesn't take over your life. As an engineer, you will gain exposure to a lot of power generation control system vendors, including their software and hardware. The rank and file engineers and non-executive supervisors and project managers are intelligent, wonderful teammates that really care about each other.

    Cons

The skills needed for simulation are not directly transferable and the new executives (CEO and COO) tried to institute a non-compete agreement that prohibits former employees from working for any of the companies that would be most interested in hiring an engineer with the skills learned at GSES. Consequently, GSES continues to lack competitive pay or benefits and the executives erroneously believe they can take employees for granted. As a result of this approach, and despite the misguided attempt to trap engineers with the new non-compete, key employees are leaving at an alarming rate.

    Advice to Management

Revert the egregious policy changes. When introducing new changes in the future, call a meeting and explain why they are financially necessary and provide proof to support those assertions. Stop squeezing the employees to artificially make the company appear profitable.

I have been working at GSE Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The engineers and all employees are helpful, kind, and appreciative of each individual. Have always had a team approach and promoting of communicating, and nurturing.

    Cons

Executive manager is driving good employees away by demeaning those who have worked in the business for years. Many have more work than can be completed in even a 50 hour week and it is getting worse by the week.

I worked at GSE Systems (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the employees are great.
The pay is competitive in the Sykesville office.
Challenging work that will keep employees engaged

    Cons

New management works in a vacuum.
New management thinks that talented employees with 10+ years of experience can be easily replaced.
The COO's lack of people skills is driving all good employees out the door.

    Advice to Management

Do not extend the COO contract when it expires
Allow your team to provide input on processes
Stop taking bonuses at an executive level if they are not offered at the worker level

    Pros

Flexibility with work hours in certain departments.

    Cons

Overall atmosphere and moral can be improved. Senior Management needs to take more investment in their employees. Wished work/life balance was a concern of leaders. Outdated equipment for a software company.
