I worked at Gainesville Student Business Services

    Pros

Flexible hours, effort based, learn to type faster- incentives to improve in order to make more $$ - productivity = better per hour salary

    Cons

Easy to burn out - mindless at times - back/head pain from sitting and typing for hours on end

    Advice to Management

Keep helping new hires, the job lends itself to part-time workers. No need to try and eliminate turn-over considering the nature of the job. But helps to keep developing them, picking up the X-factor and increasing their productivity.

I worked at Gainesville Student Business Services full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Great for those of us with severe ADHD who can focus on multiple things at once, like listening and deciphering crappy audio whilst typing, watching the screen, remembering macros, rewinding if we need to, and keeping our typing speed at the absolute max. Great for those of us who can touch type whilst listening, transcribe, and daydream about other things. Many times I people-watched while I transcribed. Helped with...

    Cons

Carpal tunnel like whoa. If you're prone to headaches or back issues, this is the point of no return. Upper management leaves something to be desired. Occasional inappropriate conduct, some blatant favoritism. The gossip. OH, THE GOSSIP. Some of the younger employees haven't learned the golden rule of keep other peoples' names out of their mouths and mind their own back yard. Worst thing to date: The Oxford...

    Advice to Management

No more hiring the homeless or those with significant drug habits. Moving locations was a great idea. Thumbs up. Perhaps instill a bit more of a dress code than "No bikinis." Maybe model after the Tally office? They seem to have their stuff together.

I worked at Gainesville Student Business Services part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Extremely flexible hours. You won't find more flexibility in hours anywhere else. Can work as few as 16 hours a week, or up to (??) -- I can't remember how many you can work up to because I always did the minimum of 16, but you can work way more hours than just 16, I just don't remember how many, sorry! You can schedule your hours for any days of the week, but the weekends are restricted to only those who worked at...

    Cons

It hurt my fingers to type for 4 hours a day, 4 days a week. Think about that -- you are mashing your fingers into a plastic keyboard for hours on end. It starts to hurt after a while! Talking is not allowed in the work room. If you want to talk, you have to go to the break areas. This is also a pro, though, because it makes working a lot easier (it's hard enough as it is to understand what some of the callers are...

I have been working at Gainesville Student Business Services part-time for more than a year

    Pros

There are always hours and the company is open long so you can work when you need to.

    Cons

Company has set processing time incredibly high so there is no room for error, wrist injuries common, low morale, conflicting decisions from QAs and Leads. They genuinely don't care about you and it shows.

    Advice to Management

care about your employees, don't treat them like cattle, raise your processing rate so people aren't wearing themselves out.

I worked at Gainesville Student Business Services part-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Very flexible schedule; you more or less work when you want to, though there is a minimum of 16 hours a week. Pay is competitive and increases as your WPM increases. There are also opportunities for "promotions" to QA, Custom Scribe (captioning) and Custom QA that come with pay raises.

    Cons

Not much opportunity for advancement beyond QA. There is a bit of favoritism present, meaning certain employees get preferential treatment. No benefits, and no taxes deducted from your paycheck -- yes, that's a con. If you aren't a decent saver this job might not be for you.

    Advice to Management

Try to be a bit more egalitarian in how you treat scribes.

I worked at Gainesville Student Business Services

        Pros

The job is exactly what it is supposed to be -- a part time desk job to help finance school.

        Cons

No major cons -- pay is low but that is to be expected.

        Negative Outlook

I worked at Gainesville Student Business Services part-time for more than 2 years

        Pros

As others have said, very flexible schedule. You make your own hours and after a beginning probationary period you can schedule as many or as few hours (above 16 hours a week )as you want. As most of the transcription is financial, you will learn your Roths from your 401(k)s from your annuities and could probably construct a financial plan for someone in your sleep. You will also become a better typist than all your friends.

        Cons

The most soul crushing place I have ever worked. The job itself requires you to type at 65+ wpm for hours at a time while deciphering audio of usually poor quality. The only promotion you can receive as a scribe is to QA, which can actually make you less money than being a scribe but allows you "breaks" for your hands while you review other scribes jobs for accuracy. There are only 2-4 shift leads per office and your...

        Advice to Management

Stop all office favoritism (and by that I mean treat everyone well, not just the cute girls and those with the lowest X-factors), pay everyone, especially your QAs, a decent wage, and actually create an environment where people feel like they are valued employees in an office and not easily replaceable typing drones.

I have been working at Gainesville Student Business Services full-time for more than 6 years

        Pros

Flexibility is HUGE. You can make your own schedule from the start. Can change with a couple week's notice, often flexible about more short notice changes as well. Pay is productivity-based so pay will naturally increase.

        Cons

No real growth potential. Mind-numbingly boring. Pay is low. Conflicting information on standards is common. Difficulty of work heavily influenced by factors outside of employee control.

        Advice to Management

        Find ways to reduce turnover.
