I worked at GameStop full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Fun work environment
Regular customers are fun to engage with
    You sell fun.

    Cons

Employees are cogs in the machine, management doesn't care about you.
    False promises of promotions.
    Terrible structure.
Pay employees over the age of 18 minimum wage and expect their best effort.

    Advice to Management

I worked as an ASL for this company for two years. I led the district in sales 18/24 months I was full time. I was continuously promised an opportunity for promotion only to get passed up for an outside hire TWICE. If you aren't a puppet for management they refuse to advance you. Their metric system is horrendous. The employee turnover is outrageous because we expect GAs to sell like they're on commission but pay them minimum wage. This company has 4-5 years before it ends up just like Hastings did. The need to value their employees, who are an asset, not an expense. GameStop went from being a place gamers came to enjoy shopping for the things they love to a used car lot in a matter of months.

I worked at GameStop as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

No accountability, flexible hours, free game information, no overtime, new employees to meet, eager customers and lots of written material. Does donate to charities.

    Cons

Disconnected managers to the end product. Lack of commitment to staff. High stressed supervision. No follow thru on promises, over process work with no training. No management trust. No management skills to recognize valuable employees.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at what's important and listen to team members, not unqualified supervisors.

I worked at GameStop full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Store managers get a lot of free stuff. It is fun to talk about video games with nice customers

    Cons

Micromanaging, company changes focus every couple months and expects all employees to perform well under new focus in the first week. Conference calls are too frequent and seldom discuss anything important. As a woman i experienced discrimination from customers, peers and even my boss. The benefits arent great. Yearly bonus is a joke. Customers are increasingly difficult due to Gamestops recent bad PR.

    Advice to Management

Stop flailing around like a drowning person. Pick a direction and go with it. The customer service focus was working at my store and my district. Then it was changed to preowned focus and then COL. I haven't heard a word about surveys in months. I had over 300 surveys in 2015 my store rocked everything else as well.

I worked at GameStop full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fun environment when customers connect with games you recommend.

    Cons

Field Management doesn't allow for growth through trail and error. No opportunities to advance unless you know someone.

    Advice to Management

Allow your Store Managers to manage their store and give them the tools needed to excel.

    I worked at GameStop full-time

    Pros

My staff was the only good part, and my nostalgic love for games.

    Cons

Salaried position and no payroll support with constant unrealistic expectations and time wasting processes/activities. Not a job for anyone who wants to spend time with family or enjoy any sort of extended time off.
