I worked at GameStop part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Some Friendly CoWorkers
    Game Rentals
    Midnight Releases
    Game Discussion
    Insider Info
    Free PSN/XBL
    Preorder Swag
    Free Games Sometimes

    Cons

    No Commision
    Oppressive Sales Goals
    Gossip Culture
    Measly Discount
    GS TV, Nuff Said
"I can get it less @ (x) store"

    Advice to Management

C.O.L is trash, you do not care about keeping employees who do. Major changes need to be made company wide. No one at any level at GS is getting paid enough for the work the may or may not have signed for.

I worked at GameStop (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Discount was a nice perk and my store was one of the top performing stores in my district.

    Cons

    -Staff turnover was high
    -Team atmosphere was poor

    Advice to Management

Incentivise employees to create a better selling culture

I worked at GameStop part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get paid to talk about video games. Developed great friendships.

    Cons

Because of the pro(s), which corporate knows, they can get away with the lowball pay. I used to love the job but since the holidays our store was reduced to the are minimum on hours meaning only ASM/SM saw more than 20 hours a week. In addition the workload was almost immediately doubled along with sales expectations.

On a local level the store can be a great place to work but corporate sucks the life out of it.

    Advice to Management

Stop nickle and diming guests and for the love of god get rid of the pre owned game rentals.

I worked at GameStop full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Easy to start. It was a lot of fun and easy work before you get into management.

    Cons

Management is abusive. I dealt with multiple sexual harassment cases for being a female in a male work environment.

    Advice to Management

Trash it all and start over.

I worked at GameStop full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Gamestop provides discounts on used games and allows you to borrow copies under the GMs discretion. You may also get to keep excess posters.

    Cons

The pay is hourly and low, the discounts aren't comparable to other major retailers and cash deposits are made by hand.

    Advice to Management

Pay increases will build more loyalty and cash deposits should be picked up by the banks instead of having employees do it.

I worked at GameStop full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fun environment, fast paced (most of the time), games galore, most coworkers are cool and helpful though lots of them lack actual product knowledge.

    Cons

Customers are terrible, pay is low, opportunity to move up is slim, hardly any other way to learn about what the company expects from employees unless you are constantly doing internet training. Wifi/Ethernet connections almost nonexistent for most stores. Corporate does not reward wide swathe of hardworking employees and simply ignores people.

    Advice to Management

Reward workers who show initiative and tenacity instead of those that are simply convenient "yes men".There are far too many inexperienced employees in the ASL/SGA positions. Most managers (with exception to a few) are competent and need more tools to help their employees learn proper practices for trade-ins procedures and customer interactions. STOP RELYING ON COOKIE CUTTER INTERNET TRAINING VIDEOS, it's 2017.

    Pros

    Good experience builder
    Generally fun people; like games
    Cool environment

    Cons

    Corporate initiatives are restricting
    Lack of guaranteed hours
Customers are hit or miss, some can be super strange

    Advice to Management

Corporate needs to listen to store managers more

    I worked at GameStop full-time

    Pros

I loved my co-workers. They were some of the best people I've ever met. My manager was also great. He would go above and beyond for us and our customers.

    Cons

    - Pay. I was "full-time" meaning I worked over 30 hours, but the benefits were awful. I was also in "management," but I made less than people working at Sheetz.
    -No PTO or vacation
-Poor company ideals. The Circle of Life is the Circle of Death. When Amazon offers 20% off new titles you don't have to leave the House to get, why bother? I mean, sure, Gamestop does have used (pre-owned) games, but let me tell you, Amazon and other retailers are still cheaper.
    - Hours fluctuate. A lot. I would work 39 hours (never 40 that's over time) one week and then 10 the next.
-Benefits, what are those? You get zero benefits - nothing. I was a SGA and would be responsible for the entire store for days on end, but heaven forbid I get paid jury duty or dental.

    Advice to Management

My management was great. This is corporate. They need to take care of their employees, especially if they're in management - any level. They lost me and I was offered higher positions because I knew this business would not succeed.

I worked at GameStop part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Check out policy
Some of your co-workers are great
    Can be excellent sales training
Getting to help the customers who actively need it is really fulfilling

    Cons

Nobody from any management level ever really quits (almost all get fired)
Numbers are punishing to get and you can watch others fake their numbers and not get in trouble for it
Customers can be absolute pains (these are the intentional ones mostly)
You have to give the same five tier pitch to every customer, regardless of purchase or interest level
Company is placed in a market they are rapidly losing (hence all of the extra non-game merchandise: cell phone plans, tablets, statues, t-shirts, the credit card, etc.)
If you ever get on a DM's bad side you are automatically done
    Near impossible to move up
