I have been working at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

I have been with you Gander mountain for a little over a year and have been promoted 2 times and have received four raises. I feel as if Gander mountain is very fair when it comes to paying their employees a decent wage compared to other employers. Most other employers will not pay an employee for past experience beginner mountain does and very well so.

    Cons

Some of the cons are that management oftentimes hires the wrong kind of employees to support their store. Many times employees with bad attitudes are allowed to prosper. Many people complain about having to sell certain things, but that is what you do in a retail environment so if you're going to complain about that don't work in retail.

    Advice to Management

Run job fairs or at least attend them that way you could pick of litter not just those who apply for online jobs.

I have been working at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The culture and atmosphere make it a fun place to work. The pay is extremely competitive and there are advancements inside the company.

    Cons

Heavy emphasis on metrics. Poor investment in infrastructure, omnichannel, and IT that leaves processes for the employees to stressful with outdated equipment.

I have been working at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

The discounts are really good and the product selection is great. Good deals on firearm classes and the virtual range is awesome!

    Cons

Always extremely understaffed and management doesn't care. The push to get credit cards and summit plans outweighs the importance of good customer service. Employee purchased have to be paid for by cash or debit only, unless of course you have a Gander credit card.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees better. Without them you are nothing! Taking away commissions and having them work on holidays, only to make them take an extra day off so you don't have to pay the extra money is pretty crappy!

I have been working at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Extensive employees discounts from both the company and vendors that will keep any outdoor enthusiast excited. A good stepping stone for those in retail who are looking to move up to management levels, although competition is high.

    Cons

Current attitudes on what is considered "good business" from base camp is nothing short of toxic. As a member of salaried management at one of the top performing stores in the company, the pressure for results is at most times beyond what most retailers would expect of their management teams. Any pushback on "flavor of the month" projects, will land you in the bad graces of your DM or Regional VP and is a sure fire way...

    Advice to Management

Focus on building the team you have in your stores. Create an actual open dialogue where management feels like they can make a difference, not be chastised for going against the grain. Do not continue to fill base camp with toxic executives who all have failed retail industry experience plastered all over their resumes ( specifically the unreasonable love affair with ex circuit city employees) Get your head out of the...

    Advice to Management

More training for managers & zone managers. Give them the tools to succeed & don't threaten their jobs when things don't go as planned. Remember life happens.

I worked at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Discounts, 3 point 5 training and discounts, commissions, part time flexibility

    Cons

SM is lost. They only care about credit cards and pro plans. This is not a place for a career, watched to many good employees leave. Upper management does not value the truth of how the store is being ran into the ground.

    Advice to Management

When multiple associates bring the same issues on how bad the store is being ran it is your job to make sure you take their concerns to heart or all the good ones will leave!

I have been working at Gander Outdoors

    Pros

Fun people to work with and great to interact with customers

    Cons

Where do I start? I have been employed 9 months and almost my whole district has turned over management. Base camp needs to get a clue how to manage a big box company. They decide to change policies almost weekly and flip flop all the time on what they believe. The owner is a jerk who won't even shake your hand when he comes into the building, cause people want to work for that? The whole company is run through fear and...

    Cons

If you are female good luck! No respect and a very bias work environment. No work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to who is most qualified for the positions that are open instead of promoting the store manager favorite. Broken policies and procedures for the company.
