I worked at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working in the firearms department was relatively fun. Like any retail, it could get frustrating dealing with customers or merchandising.

    Cons

Hours were not steady for part time, had to push credit cards and protection plans

    Advice to Management

Stand up to corporate when they try to implement bonehead ideas/products. We shouldn't clear off products that we have instock, just to wait weeks/months to get the new product.

I have been working at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The company is going out of business. The "old guard" created this situation. The outlook is very bright with the new brand "Gander Outdoors" . The new CEO Marcus Lemonis is bringing a whole new philosophy for this company to the table. Old school pricing was "cost plus" take the product cost and add percentage of markup. Mr. Lemonis is doing "market minus" (same as Walmart) take the average retail market price of...

    Cons

Micro management of employees and stores. Inability to listen to input form individual stores. Excessive focus on selling credit cards and protection plans. Naively thinking they force the rest of the market to stay abreast with them as they increased margins to make more money and were oblivious to the fact that they were driving away their customer base with inflated prices.

    Advice to Management

Go back to what you are good at selling beer!

    Pros

Great discounts and Pro deals. Used to have a great culture with knowledgable and engaged staffing,

    Cons

Forgot about the customer! Worried too much on selling credit and protection plans. Could not retain the experts who drew the customers to the stores,

    Advice to Management

    Too Late!

I worked at Gander Outdoors full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great customers, Employee discounts, Vendor discounts.

    Cons

Limited advancement Pushed credit cards and protection plans Poor management

    Advice to Management

Start acting like you work for the customer, not your profit margin alone. Really, start drug testing managers and above frequently. There was a problem. Helpful hint: If you hire the staff in a district from Comp USA, a company that went bankrupt, your going to have the same problems as Comp USA. Customers were treated badly with no recourse. And let people return items according to policy! Returns were allowed...

I worked at Gander Outdoors part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Discounts are very good. Customers are cordial. Majority of employees are not difficult to work with.

    Cons

Shifts vary from week to week. Employees are never certain how many hours you might work each week, which makes it difficult to budget. Usually management schedules part time help for less than 20 hours. Many Gander employees work two jobs to support themselves & their families. Some managers are rude to employees in person, in front of customers, & on the radios. Customer service areas have cords which employees...

    Advice to Management

Please do not think of employees as expendable. Less turnover means more experienced & knowledgeable employees, which benefits the customers & company. Fix work area problems and the above cons.

I have been working at Gander Outdoors part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Employee Discounts, Good Scheduling for College students, bond with coworkers about how terrible the managers are. Get to play with guns and learn things from other coworkers about different aspects of the outdoors.

    Cons

If you don't sell the credit card you will get fired. This is the biggest flaw in the company as we didn't join gander to sell credit cards we joined to sell guns. Also it's ridiculously difficult to sell that card to anyone who has any sort of knowledge about credit as the interest rate on the card is 24%. (Lol) We also didn't join to sell protection plans on guns that already...

    Advice to Management

No one wants your stupidly high interest rate, no benefits credit card. Stop making good employees leave your store because of credit. If you let us teach customers about guns you would have more sells and wouldn't have to have credit cards. We can't tell people features on guns because we're too busy trying to scam them with credit and protection plans. Also lower your goals, your current goals are unobtainable and...

Firearm Culture Regulatory Compliance team at Base Camp Vendor purchase programs provide a great value for the outdoor/hunting oriented

    Cons

-Lack of Work Life Balance -No formal training for salary management -Sales Floor Leader Program is the worst idea ever, it makes you feel like a sleazy used car salesman. -Conversion expectations are unrealistic. (Transactions/Shopper Traffic) -Lack of payroll to properly staff building -Communication from Base Camp is poor and often contradictory. Advice to Management

Everything should be run like the Regulatory Compliance department. Get rid of SFL and Mystery Shops. Reward your employees when they succeed. Happy employees=Happy Customers. Lower prices to be more competitive. Customers don't care about exceptional customer service, they just want product at the best possible price.

    Pros

Nice co-workers, comfortable environment. Always hiring.

    Cons

You never know what you'll be doing from day to day--multitasking abounds, Low salary, unpredictable scheduling, crappy computers and de-activation equipment-- very slow and often go offline. Checkout lines disorganized and co-mingled with hunting license issue and returns. Always pushing hard to sell outrageously high interest credit cards and product protection plans. Massive...
