I have been working at Gander Outdoors part-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The actually work of selling product and talking with customers is great. Nice discount.

    Cons

New policies are not rewarding the best producing employees with more hours. Upper management has flat out lied to employees several times. Reduced pay rate for new hires down from what is was a year ago and the new employees are getting more hours than the older ones do to their cheaper cost of work. Expected to take on the responsibilities of a supervisor after one left without...

    Pros

    Nice Colleagues. Covered Parking onsite

    Cons

Upper Management not communicating to each other. Camping World Exec will give direction that is contradictory to Gander Outdoor VP and then both will blame employee for following the other's direction. Camping World team does not understand the hut/fish market and doesnt want to learn from team to better service customers. Category Directors keep their mouth shut because...

    Advice to Management

Trust the teams in place. You were promoted and put into your role because you are not going to say no, but you need to support the buyers. Camping World should just let us all go like they did with the other teams that disagreed with them and spoke their minds and truth. It is obvious they would prefer this method.

I worked at Gander Outdoors full-time

    Pros

    discounts on products. great co-workers

    Cons

poor upper management from the corporate level. Was told lie after lie about everything from company status all the way down to store status. New company, Camping World, was told for 6 months during bankruptcy that jobs would be kept, and on the last day, they said we changed our minds

I have been working at Gander Outdoors part-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Great discounts, fun people to work with, learned a lot of new cool things, decent pay, fun environment to make work fun.

    Cons

Upper management has unrealistic expectations and always pressure you to force customers to buy things, hours are inconsistent for part time employees, prices for the products are higher than anywhere else always being nagged to price match.

I worked at Gander Outdoors part-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Fun environment for people who enjoy the outdoors. Extensive selection of product and decent prices. Mostly friendly staff. Lower Management (Supervisors) is normally friendly and caring.

    Cons

Where do I begin. Management and their business practices are some of the worst in retail. They pay little to no attention to their employees beyond enforcing the bottom line of sales. Focused more on corporate set goals then actually taking care of their employees and customers. Upper management uses threatening as a means of getting results. Absolutely no job security especially...

    Advice to Management

You don't value your employees or customers. This is the reason you have filed for bankruptcy. Quit shoving credit cards and protection plans down people's throat. They'll get it if they want it. And stop threatening your employees. I can't count how many times I was told my job was on the line if I didn't meet ridiculous metric goals. It's disgusting that you use fear as a motivational tactic. I hope that after you restructure...

    I worked at Gander Outdoors

    Pros

Small organization to enable quick analysis and flat organizational decision making. There are many great professionals at the home office and very honest and dedicated folks at retail.

    Cons

Incompetent senior management who don't have people skills and don't have leadership skills in redefining a retail organization. Very militant and back stabbing leadership which shows in overall results and organization failure... hence bankruptcy. Very old school and 'good ole boy' structure. Stay away. Not a good resume building company. Read other employees input here. I was upper...

    Pros

Awesome discounts. If you can find a manager that wants to teach you and wants you to move up do it ! PTO 401k matches you 100% on 3%

    Cons

I didn't get the training I needed because no one would send me out they only talked about it. I asked and they kept pushing me off. They push the credit and summits so hard. They will cut your hours or you if not making goal. Management doesn't talk to each other. So you have your store manager telling you something and then your zone manager telling you something completely different and then the store manager is...

    Advice to Management

Get it together. Talk to one other. Talk to your employees like they matter. Understand not everything can get done. Understand that not everything takes 15 mins can't get done. Understand while your sitting in your office all day we are making your goals for the day ++ doing everything you have asked us to do + more. Treat them better.

    Pros

Great store, nice location, lots of flexibility. Pay is average. New buildings and lots of inventory. Good people in the stores.

    Cons

Management is poor. Constantly changing directions, lack of appreciation, upper management is very weak. Bonuses are out of reach. Managing by intimidation.

    Advice to Management

Your biggest asset are your people. Start appreciating them and treating them well or prepare to close your doors.

    Pros

There really weren't any pros. Salary was ok, benefits were ok, discounts were ok. Nothing was super special.

    Cons

Too much red tape for a small company. Very poor planning by executive leadership, upper management, and poor execution of a solid ecommerce plan. Stay away from here, very shaky future.

    Advice to Management

Secure your plans before hiring people only to have layoffs right before Christmas!

I have been working at Gander Outdoors for more than a year

    Pros

Discount, learning about products. Being around the outdoor customers.

    Cons

Everything. Don't be suckered into false promises. There's a reason this company is rated so poorly, and no you can't be the difference. Get ready to work 70 hour weeks and have more stress than ever. Upper management from the owner down is clueless.

    Advice to Management

Learn to value employees. You have hard working employees in your company, but do nothing to take care of them. Don't hold a conference call and say things need to be changed as of now and you need to drop all focus to that task, but then scream about hours.
