I have been working at Gannett full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pretty loose reign, free to listen to podcasts/music while working, take breaks when you'd like, occasional creative freedom, very nice dual screen Macs

    Cons

Often there is mandatory overtime and it can be up to 12 to 15 hours a week on top of your regular 40 hour work week. This is rough for those with families or those who actually want a social life. It's also very annoying because you're always hired on as strictly nights (4 p to 12:30 a) and once you get locked into that shift it is next to impossible to get switched to a more reasonable time (i.e. ANY time in the morning). The cubicle environment can also get a little obnoxious since you all sit in one giant room together. Hard to feel creative

    Advice to Management

Let employees have more say in what shift they want to work.

I have been working at Gannett (More than a year)

    Pros

At least on the local level, Gannett pays its freelancers a tad better than other news organizations.

    Cons

Work comes and goes, both by the season and by the whim of the ever-changing management staff.

    Advice to Management

Realize that freelancers are increasingly important as FT contributors dwindle. Pay them well, of courses, but also treat them like they are members of the team.

  7. "CNC machine repair"

    Pros

Lots of overtime is available but is also forced at times. Exposure to many different types of machines and equipment. Air conditioned work area.

    Cons

High expectations and high workload. The pay is low compared to similar employers in the same region doing comparable work. Supervision expects miracles to be worked with little support.

I have been working at Gannett full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good PTO incentives for length of service (using the days off was the hard part). Regardless of the downsides, you learn a lot - trial by fire and if you thrive in that type of environment, you will come out with a lot of hard earned education and experience.

    Cons

Work/life balance didn't exist. Compensation is significantly lower than other companies within the same industry. Goal-setting was not strategic, goals were always set to x% growth YOY instead of taking into consideration one's territory, industry segments, etc. Goals should be set for 6-12 months so you can create a game plan, doesn't really help when goals were set one month into the current quarter.

    Advice to Management

Reward loyalty and performance, not just those who are yes-men. After more than a decade of service, I didn't receive a milestone anniversary gift or card (like every other employee) and on my last day, not even a good luck card from the company. I guess don't even reward loyalty - just an acknowledgement might have been nice. When someone is consistently asking for professional development opportunities and works hard to earn them, maybe throw them a bone and provide some sort of development opportunity,

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Gannett full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The media industry is changing, and Gannett is writing their own playbook. So, assuming you can keep your job, you will learn something new each year. The company's investment in its home-grown Presto CMS is a great technological feat.

    Cons

Terrible pay. Cruel practices, like when they tell everyone their jobs are ending and invite them to apply for jobs that are slightly different on paper. Layoffs, pay cuts and furloughs make working for Gannett a bit like playing Russian Roulette.

    Advice to Management

Your audience knows how much you have cut from the product while raising the price.
