Overall, too much burden on managers for not enough benefits
Apr 9, 2019 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-benefits better than most if you're part-time (401k, some health care) -pay equity
Cons
-work life balance: many are expected to do overtime especially ahead of big store visits -no PTO for part-time workers even though half of management is technically part time and are expected to work nearly full time -constant restructuring of upper management -too much pressure and work expected out of only a few people leading a store

Something is Off at Gap
Jul 28, 2017 - Corporate Finance Manager in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The benefits are decent. Pay was more or less in line with expectations. Outwardly the culture was welcoming and inclusive. There are multiple employees with tenure of 15+ years. There are opportunities to transfer between organizational groups. A company that truly focuses on equality. The employees seem to care for their brands and the stores they support. Athleta and Old Navy are helping turn the company around. Innovative products at Athleta and the push to integrate some of the new technology with current brands should improve the future outlook for the company. Healthy balance sheet should insulate Gap from temporary market pressure (see: Edgar).
Cons
The company's stock price continues to decline despite meeting or beating market predictions (public filings, investor calls and notes, and web search for stock history support this assertion). This stock pressure combined with the recent layoffs (2016) and having investment bankers and consultants running the company results in an awkward feeling at the corporate office. Job security is lacking and there were several hundred layoffs last year and multiple WARN filings. This combined with the restructuring left the remaining employees to pick up the load. Work life balance has suffered in the past several years as a result of downsizing. The main discount (50% off at Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic & 25% off Athleta) seems wonderful until you realize the brands (Old Navy, Gap, & Banana Republic) have 40%-50% off sales pretty much every month. These values may change and can generally be found via Google search or GlassDoor reviews.

Good work/life balance (depending on shift worked); 20 days of PTO annually to both exempt and non-exempt employees; good company discount
Cons
Internal upward mobility seems to be based more on whether or not management likes you and you fit in, rather than performance and accomplishments

GapTech - the transforming technology division in a retail corporation
Aug 11, 2016 - IT Project Manager in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- emphasize global responsibility and community involvement; - many great people who are smart with great team spirit -tech is strategic enabler so stay current with technology and best practices - encourage innovation - mostly open culture - work life balance has improved a lot in the past few years and is well maintained for most teams - Flexible work time/location and flexible WFH option (may depend on teams/project and manager but in general is a norm in GapTech) - there has been growing pain for the former digital division's IT and there has been a lot of re-org since the merge of former GID IT and the Corporate IT thus lost a lot of good talents. But the latest GapTech re-org cut out a lot of redundancy and old bureaucracy, it may not be all right but is well received by a lot of folks and towards the right direction. In a way, the last 10 years from GID to GapTech is like a startup tech company going through growing pain and the pain of merging with a legacy Corp. Frustrating at times but there's still energy like a tech company. - it's a financially sound company with money to invest in technology
Cons
Not so easy for advancement though there are opportunities for horizontal movement; Retail apparel business is a not-so-stella industry to be in now so don't expect a big bonus There has been struggles for the business to deliver consistently good products Big corporations always have good and bad middle mgmt so having a good manager is important. Too many different communication tools as different teams may try different things but it makes communications a bigger challenge for globally spread-out teams and many different functions/departments/projects/teams As a company trying to transform in a transforming industry, there's a lot of uncertainty and a lot of changes. Not for someone looking for stability.

Great company unless you work in IT
Aug 17, 2018 - Principal Software Engineer in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great work/life balance, good pay, exciting company culture, and transparent leadership.
Cons
Tech leaders are doing away with Work/Life balance (via DevOps) and offshoring 2000 jobs to India. Until this new crop of leaders this was my favorite job.
