I worked at Garage full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

As part of the expansion in the US I was able to travel, train, and share my passion for the business. I made myself available for stretch assignments and therefore was able to grow both personally and professionally. Good insurance.

      Cons

Recognition is given based on favoritism and politics, not based on actual results. You cannot trust anyone in the US organization, constant backstabbing and shady business by coworkers and district manager/regional manager so they can shine. Regional manager is not straight forward— runs the east coast like she is still in high school. Be prepared to have extremely thick skin— because you will be talked to like absolute...

      Advice to Management

Look at how the east coast is run now... so many long standing, passionate, and driven employees have left in just the last two years— what’s the common denominator?

      Pros

Bonus pay to managers and sales associates when goal is reached for the month. 50% off Clothing Promotes within company Offers to pay $300 for education Health insurance for full time employees

      Cons

Company expects you to run around and do everything with only 2 people working. They care about profit and wage cost more than exhausting their employees. Very little pay for managers who run around and do everything. Minimum wage went up $2 in my county sales associates got a raise and management didn’t. Resulting in management only making $2 more than them vs $5-7 more for all our hard work. The district manager,...

      Advice to Management

Corporate needs to talk to their employees and get rid of the cruel district managers that are in charge. If a survey was taken every employee would agree on how they are being treated.

I worked at Garage full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      Sadly can't think of much.

      Cons

The company misrepresents both its financial health (red flags everywhere) and their willingness to support the growth and promotion of employees. Promises are made and not kept. The sales goals are individualized and come with warnings about job security if you don't meet the goals. The clothing style and quality has changed and the consumer is not happy so this makes it difficult to sell. The individual goals also...

      Advice to Management

The company needs to reevaluate thE individual sales goal approach asap and look for ways to team build... If the company truly expects to grow then they also need to put together a comprehensive succession plan and help their employees grow with them.

I worked at Garage for more than a year

      Pros

Fun products and fun sales associates.

      Cons

Management is disrespectful and the managers that I worked alongside were resentful of my presence. Their manager hired me without offering them my position. As a result there was a lot of animosity and people not showing up or on time for work. Also, many tasks were neglected and blame was spread around instead of taking ownership.

      Advice to Management

Team build, coach and retrain from a corporate level. Monitor and follow-up/follow through. If no definitive results, clean house.

I worked at Garage full-time for more than a year

      Pros

For a retail company, they pay all employees pretty well. I was a GM so I saw everybody's wages and even the seasonal staff made more in comparison to most other retailors. The company has worked very hard to create a culture and make it really easy to immerse yourself in it. They also participated in a lot of philanthropy and encouraged store level employees to get excited about raising more for local charities,...

      Cons

The management training does not set you up for success. It is very rushed for a company that is so operations and policy heavy. Your success with the company depends entirely on who your DSS (or DM) is. Ours was...less than. She was very malicious and did not carry herself professionally and had a lot of store manager turnover. She is actually the reason I resigned. I have known managers in other districts, however,...

      Advice to Management

DO NOT hire people just because you need to fill a position, it is detrimental to the success of the whole district. TRAIN not only your managers to be successful, but your district managers to be a resource for them. No one should be scared to call their DSS, the DSS is there to help. Make sure your HR reps take their jobs seriously and don't throw lower level associates under the bus. If you actually want feedback...

I worked at Garage full-time for more than a year

      Pros

50% off discount was the only upside

      Cons

Inconsistent leadership. I was with the company for less than a year and went through 4 District Managers. This should have been a real red flag for me. As an external hire you will be told it takes about 9 month to get into the Garage world, but any misstep you take in those 9 months will be viewed as a failure and not as a learning. Be ready for swearing from company seniors as well. They will expect professionalism...

      Pros

Great product, great discount and overall good company to work for!

      Cons

Invest more time in the development of your people not just selected people. Make budgets attainable and WE need more work/home life balance for Managers. We have life's outside of work so please be considerate to that durning slow times. Have more of a DM presence in all locations so each team has support.

      Advice to Management

Many Floorsets and related tasks going on throughout the day, they are very customer oriented so sometimes you cannot finish tasks and it can be stressful. This is the case in many retail stores though. If you don't make your budgets be prepared to speak to why and be held accountable. Technology could be more advanced as well. It can also be difficult to balance home life if you have kids as this company wants Managers...

I have been working at Garage for more than a year

      Pros

You get a really great discount and the opportunity to bonus on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis.

      Cons

Little to no communication or interaction with your superiors outside of store level; Superiors only seek the opinions and feelings of Store Manager. Its almost like no one else in management's opinion is valid. No room to coach upward or voice concerns validly.

      Advice to Management

Support ALL of your MTeam members, not just your store managers or company vets, you will lose potential company vets by treating them as if they do not matter.
