I worked at Garden City Hotel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good income. Pleasant co-workers for the most part. General Management is great in recent change over in ownership and revitalizing the hotel and putting in 30 million into renovations and additions. During my time I was fortunate to see the transformation of the hotel, also going through bad times overall provided sufficient income for me and my family. I got to meet many regular guest and build relationships with them and also build within my fellow employees.

    Cons

Management was fast moving, lots of changes in management and new faces as far as the upper level employees are considered. The waiters stayed at that, few making "captain" which really didnt make a difference besides getting a percentage on wine sales. No growth internally after becoming waiter and stubborn HR policies and unpleasant HR Personel. Which seems to be a personal vendetta against certain workers and not very present during normal operations.

    Advice to Management

Be more connected with normal day to day operations and whats going on within the hotel. As a breakfast waiter I would cover for managers arriving late without notice, opening the doors and starting the opentable system and turning on light tvs etc. Management of restaurant takes advantage of that. The second an employee(non manager) is late three times, They are terminated.

I worked at Garden City Hotel full-time

    Pros

co workers are great, most leave within a year. Everyone tries to help you out and its a small knit family. great ambiance to work in depending on position

    Cons

managers don;t care about you. you can get away with almost anything. If they mess up, you have to pay for their mistakes.

    Advice to Management

learn to lead and not rule. most managers dont care how their staff is feeling, especially during prime time of multiple events. can't handle too much on their plates.

    Pros

    2 weeks of vacations
    few sick days
    paid few holidays
if you want to make a career in this business then here is a good place to start

    Cons

most management are old employees without an improvement in the hospitality level
lack of materials and equipment to do a task or a project
    salary or wage is basic
    NO union hotel
10 new employees get hired but in less of 8 months only two of them stays
old management tends to curse in the back of the employees. They should be a role model

    Advice to Management

old management needs training to be in the same level or excel the standards of the Manhattan hotels.
Old management are bossy or get mad easily, this is because the previous general manager was arrogant and basic experience in the hospitality industry so his methodology was going in the wrong way
With the new GM and company that bought the hotel in 2012, the methodology is being better in slow steps.
