I worked at Garden Ridge full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Meeting great people. Everyone except management tried to keep things like a family. Working 10+ hours a day, five days a week, people bonded fairly quickly. It made the work day go by faster.

    Cons

Management had unrealistic expectations. We were instructed to keep interaction with customers to a minimum. Closing a store the size of a super Walmart with only 3 or 4 people, with no real recovery during the day was challenging, to say the least. It was expected that the closing manager have every section of the store look like grand opening. The daytime crew would have upwards of 7 people to run the floor, not including managers. The lines for the registers were always long. The rule was if there were 3 people in line, call for backup. However, if you called for backup, they were often told not to go to the front until the cashier called once or twice more. Complaints to corporate office, by customers, were literally laughed off. Complaints to corporate office by staff lead to termination of the one who filed the complaint. If you were injured on the job, you were forced out for failure to meet job requirements, or made to seem incompetent so that GR wouldn't have to pay for short term disability.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people better.Don't assume that everyone making a complaint is a problem. Investigate when your staff raises and alarm. Don't treat everyone as expendable, especially your customers. Customer service was horrendous. If staff spent more than five minutes assisting a customer, they were treated as slacking off on the job. Yes, freight movement is important, but if you have no customers, you're missing the point.

I worked at Garden Ridge full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

$10 an hour starting out and a 56 hour work week. Over time- time & a half after 40 hours.

    Cons

Long shifts. Rude customers. Violent customers. Inexperienced managers. Dangerous. No janitor or cleaning crew. Incompetent managers. Disorganized. Filthy. No customer service. Horrible employee value. Strict policies. Lack of communication between managers and employees. Managers rude to customers: Customers spread feces on bathroom walls and mirrors. Customers left dirty diapers in multiple departments. Customers would urinate on products and bathroom walls. Improper protection for when using dangerous cleaning solvents. Many safety violations. Fire-code violations. Couldn't have water or any drink at registers- Led to dehydration in many employees. Couldn't use restroom when needed- Caused a co-workers baby development and growth to slow as well as many bladder infections. Too much product coming in and not enough shelves to put it on. Unrealistic expectations. No health benefits. No 401k. Once you leave you can never be hired there again.

    Advice to Management

This store is now called At Home but they are still following the same path as Garden Ridge. More respect for employee's. Employee and customer value. Require more training for managers. Safety equipment (I ended up in the hospital because of a managers foolish mistake with industrial strength floor stripper) needed per Hazmat regulations. Clearer policies. Leniency. Know what's going on in each store. Guidelines for managers and employees to follow...& make sure they are followed. Allow good employees to come back if they want to.
