I worked at Garmin full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice environment, good health insurance, interesting project.

    Cons

To catch deadline, no work-life balance. Salary is lower.

I worked at Garmin as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Garmin treats their employees (and interns) extremely well. As an intern you are treated very similarly to a full time employee. The mentor system is very nice because you always have someone to go to for questions. The office is beautiful and relaxation (walks, ping pong...) is greatly encouraged. The work is similar to full time employees if not more interesting (often interns get to work on special projects the full time employees cannot afford to dedicate the time to, as I did).

    Cons

Aviation is a slow field, even though Garmin develops the fastest of all companies (that I know of) within the field, it was still too slow for me.

    Advice to Management

The company as a whole is a very nice place to work, the aviation segment has some things that can be optimized but I understand due to the scale of the division it is hard to make changes.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place to work. Highly motivated teammates with lots of technical experience. Community within work is good.

    Cons

Hard to really influence products and there isn't a lot room for R&D. Some of the verification work can be bland.

    Advice to Management

I would prefer if there were more opportunities to innovate and create new technologies. Also some teams are on different sites so it can be hard to collaborate.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Laid back environment
    -Casual dress
    -Interesting work
    -Great overall benefits package
    -Highly valued work/life balance

    Cons

-Management in the aviation business segment needs to become more cohesive.
-Deadweight employees can thrive under certain managers
-Difficult to accomplish big picture goals for the organization from a remote location

    Advice to Management

Apply more pressure upwards on behalf of your team. When the team shouldn't be responsible for something, push back to the hardware group or the systems group and drive your point home.

    Pros

There is a mentorship program and they take it very seriously. I worked on code as an intern that shipped to customers and clients.

    Cons

Sometimes there was not much to do. I worked quicker than they expected (I finished my summer project in a week), and they had to scramble to find something new for me to do on multiple occasions.

    Advice to Management

The interviewing process was a little strange. I was asked questions about specific technologies. This would be fine, but I was hired by the same team and they used none of those technologies.

    Cons

Could have had more social events for interns to get to know each other better

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, excellent benefits, stable company, good 401k and PTO

    Cons

Pay is less than competitors, no stock options, not a lot of upward mobility

I worked at Garmin as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

As an intern I worked on software real projects. Some of the work involved debugging or verifying production quality software but the majority of my time was spent on developing an internal tool. I was given the project at the start of my internship and told to run with it. I designed, implemented, debugged, and updated my tool as the internship progressed. It was great to be working on my own project and implementing useful code instead of simply debugging someone else’s code or getting someone coffee.

    Cons

No real cons come to mind, but there is a 20 word minimum so… bla bla bla bla bla

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Challenging work with lots of opportunities to shape the products we work on through personal freedom and innovation. Everything we do has a purpose and the end goal in mind. Time is taken if needed to do things right, but isn't wasted on efforts that don't yield any value.

    Cons

None. There are things that could be improved with any situation, but realistically there is very little to complain about.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

I worked at Garmin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They provide great benefits, like healthcare, dental, etc. Stable company with expanding markets.

    Cons

The work atmosphere at my office was very boring. They don't have many events or other opportunities to branch out and meet new people.
