    Pros

Good benefits but not worth the grief you have to put up with

    Cons

Talk of being a great value-driven company but really all about the bottom line with no concern for customers. Major micromanagement down to the Nth detail.

    Advice to Management

They would not listen to any advice

I worked at Garmin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits provided are second to none. Comprehensive health benefits are the very best, but at a low cost to employees. Stock purchase options are above average. 401K match is excellent. The product discounts are also great.

    Cons

Garmin does not have any strong leadership in the company. Upcoming leaders are pushed out. Everyone is there for himself/herself. While some teams work well, teams do not generally work with each other well. Managers are constantly talking down about each other. The CEO and "marketing leaders" do not understand consumer marketing at all, and therefore they have amazing products that customers don't even know exist. They are extremely internally focused. They should be ranked a best place to work in the country, but are one of the worst as far as corporate culture.

    Advice to Management

Look at your competition, the consumer electronics, and CPG industries and look at what makes them successful: a focus on the customer. Use data and listen to it. Stop letting people who are afraid of their jobs being taken by others run the company. The company needs to move from an engineering focus to a marketing focus, with marketing leaders who are NOT engineers, while still prioritizing engineering and innovation - based on marketing analytics.

    Pros

The company offers great insurance and 401k programs and several other fringe benefits on top of that. Highest levels of management are good at directing the company from a big picture level.

    Cons

Very poor engineering practices. Virtually no documentation for their systems and tools, which are approaching 15-20 years old and desperately need to be rebuilt from the ground up. The company does nothing to train you on the products you will be working on, leaving you guessing on how things should function. Poor standards for testing software causing bugs to easily and frequently get released to the customer. Coding standards are not well kept and encourage writing bad code. Middle management is lazy and ignores any requests/concerns raised by employees so they don't look bad to their own managers.

    Advice to Management

Put forth effort and resources into reworking your existing software architecture and start enforcing real engineering practices. It is absurd to be using tools that haven't been updated in over a decade.

I worked at Garmin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Also offer flight training reimbursement and free loans of Garmin products.

    Cons

Management still runs the company like it were a small start up. Senior leadership has only ever worked at Garmin and have no willingness to incorporate ideas from outside the company. Salary increases are low. Expectations are often unclear and arbitarty.

    Advice to Management

Understand that leadership is not the same as management. If upper management were to interview a candidate to replace their own position, their own resume would not be considered. Management has inherited their positions due to tenure instead of developing their own leadership capabilities.

I worked at Garmin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent health benefits. Flexible hours if you are needing to work around school or childcare.

    Cons

The call center atmosphere is horrible. You are totally disconnected from the Head Quarters. Management is terrible. There is a god awful point system in place. You get dinged if you sneeze funny. Going to the restroom? Make sure you log that into your phone. Forgot to log back in? Sorry, you're going to get docked for that. Extremely micromanaged.

They have a team that scores your emails and recorded phone calls. They will try so hard to find the smallest mistake. Even if they are incorrect, you can try to fight it, but to no avail.

Getting time off for major holidays is not easy. You can request time off 6 months in advance, but everyone is gunning for the same days. First come, first served. Only a small percentage of the staff can have certain days off. If you work 2nd shift, you will not be included in any of the company get togethers or family events. Look out during United Way time. Garmin will VERY strongly encourage you to have a pre-set donation to be automatically taken out of every paycheck. (I'm all for charity, but at my own discretion).

You have to share a desk with people on other shifts. Disgusting.

I worked at Garmin full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They pay well for the area and the benefits package is the best around.
The people are friendly and there are lots of out of work activities arranged.

    Cons

They had the audacity to advertise themselves as the "Google of the mid-west" but nothing could be further from the truth. This is a grey, old fashioned cubicle farm where employees clock in at 8, go through hours of pointless meetings and clock out at 5pm on the dot with barely any work being done.

If you do try to get any work done you will be hit by roadblocks at every turn. Usually fighting their out-dated internal software and practices but it can also be peers and management expressing shock (and disappointment!) at your progress for "making them look bad".

I didn't last long here. It felt like being strangled and suppressed, dying a little piece every day until you join the ranks of the Garmin zombies trudging through to retirement and a gold watch.

    Advice to Management

    Modernize.

    Pros

The only "Pros" this company had are no longer with the company. Gary and Min were some of the best people anyone could ever work for.

    Cons

Management has no idea how to properly place people in areas that best suit them.

    Advice to Management

Pull your head out of the dark cavern it is in and see what is really going on in your company.
