    "Aviation Software Engineer"

I have been working at Garmin full-time

    Pros

The 401k match is pretty decent, although it requires a 5 year commitment. Very relaxed environment - I've never been asked or pressured to work more than 40 hours a week.

    Cons

Health benefits used to be something to brag about, but not so much any more. I realize that most places are taking a hit after a certain nationwide healthcare enforcement has been put into effect, but don't go bragging about how you have really good healthcare when there are other companies clearly beating you.

The idea behind the products are great. The code that runs them, not so much. The software life cycle that takes place may have worked when the company was started 25 years ago, but it does NOT work well with the large code base that exists now. The products are managed by people that have been with the company since the beginning who believe that "this is how we've been doing things" is a good reason for not trying become better.

Since all aviation code must live up to FAA standards, all code must be tested in a way that satisfies the FAA. This can lead to nasty hand-waving in order to say that something is "tested" which in turn causes even worse code to be written.

Salary is maybe about average, although it's not to hard to find other jobs in the KC area with better base salaries and comparable benefits.

    Pros

Company wants to care about employees, employee stock plan, pension and 401k. Insurance benefit is reasonable. Cool products and nice employee discount.

    Cons

Too many layers of management. Directors do not encourage employees to progress in their career, as if they are afraid of being replaced. Lies and backstabbing are common.

    Advice to Management

Time for housecleaning in IT management. There is a reason for the churn in certain areas and it is not because the job or company, it is their boss.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company looks after you and compared to other customer service jobs, customers are generally not unpleasant to work with. Employees get to exercise their brainpower by troubleshooting and have some decision-making leeway. Supportive peers and supervisors who accommodate employees' health needs and back them up rather than put them down when customers make excessive demands. Decent medical benefits and fairly generous perks. Employees feel freer to speak frankly about company processes than at other companies.

    Cons

Increasingly limited opportunities for advancement as more arbitrary hurdles are placed along the career path. Inconsistent communication from upper management about requirements and opportunities for advancement. Training on new products and processes can be insufficient and is often delivered right before or several weeks after the new product is publicly announced. Upper management does not appear to have a clear idea of what processes best help their employees to help their customers, favoring counterproductive cost-cutting measures over solutions that would be efficient for both employees and the bottom line. Employees may be able to speak more freely about processes, but their feedback seems to have little to no impact on company policy.

    Advice to Management

Be more clear and honest about opportunities for career advancement. Give employees greater advance notice and preparation for new products and policies.

I have been working at Garmin (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Relatively simple job, decent Company benefits and good for anyone with little experience or working towards something different career wise as they have many other opportunities within the company. But it is a decent temporary job no more than 40 a week while you work towards different goals. Good for anyone who enjoys customer service with a bit of technical twist.

    Cons

Low paid if compared to others of similar natue. Annual review process isn't the best. Not many opportunities unless you enjoy customer service. Or have your own career goals such as education

    Advice to Management

Have clear and concise quantitative data to give employees at year end annual reviews for each category being graded on. There shouldn't be a category without a clear way to do well in it. Also grade employees on how they actually do and not on some bell curve.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Laid back, informal and flexible. If you are built status quo, want to show up 8-5 and no stress it's a decent place to work.

    Cons

It's not built for the motivated and energetic type. Bringing in new ideas and knowledge of a segment usually lead to negative responses and insecurities. Too many levels of management. Poor Pay. Not much room for career growth.

    Pros

Garmin has a healthy cash flow and is committed to purchasing industry standard technologies. Garmin is very big, with over 50 offices globally.

    Cons

There are not enough security engineers for the size of the network. Garmin could do well to have sufficient staff to provide for 24/7 support.

    Advice to Management

Refocus some talent to the security team, or hire from outside. Continue to take advantage of leading technologies and processes.

    Advice to Management
