I have been working at Garmin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing benefits. They care about each employee; you're not just a number. Very sharp coworkers. Lots of freedom to take care of things as you feel they would best be served.

    Cons

The freedom granted can be a double-edged sword; it can be easy to take advantage of that.

    Advice to Management

Expect a relaxed environment, with truly empowered individual contributors.

I worked at Garmin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people. Laid back. No micromanagement. You hit your goals and hardly see your boss unless you need them. Benefits are great!

    Cons

They do not pay very much and it's a very male dominated company. Very hard to move up at all.

    Advice to Management

Have more female influence in upper management.

I worked at Garmin (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of things to do around the area. There were so many interns it felt like a college type of atmosphere at times, lots of fun. The company strongly encouraged activity, which meant that lunch time was a time to run, bike, play sports, work out, etc., keeping a very young, lively, atmosphere.

    Cons

None that I could see in my short time there.

    Pros

The company offers great insurance and 401k programs and several other fringe benefits on top of that. Highest levels of management are good at directing the company from a big picture level.

    Cons

Very poor engineering practices. Virtually no documentation for their systems and tools, which are approaching 15-20 years old and desperately need to be rebuilt from the ground up. The company does nothing to train you on the products you will be working on, leaving you guessing on how things should function. Poor standards for testing software causing bugs to easily and frequently get released to the customer. Coding standards are not well kept and encourage writing bad code. Middle management is lazy and ignores any requests/concerns raised by employees so they don't look bad to their own managers.

    Advice to Management

Put forth effort and resources into reworking your existing software architecture and start enforcing real engineering practices. It is absurd to be using tools that haven't been updated in over a decade.

I have been working at Garmin full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Great employees, very good work culture
    - They won't ask you for the overtime unless it's really really needed ( not the same case with all teams )
    - Decent Salary ( though you might find it a little low compare to your recent grad buddies working in California but the benefits are damm great, typically students consider an offer a great based on just an annual salary but they should consider all the factors that makes a company like 401k, health, dental, vision, stock purchase, product discounts, local discounts, bonus etc..)
    - Great 401k plan, puts 5% regardless of your contribution and matches 0.75 dollar for every dollar you put (upto 10% your salary), overall it meets at 12.5 % match
    - Health (medical, dental and vision) - great lowered insurance plans. 50% less compared to other famous companies that I know .
    - Flat 45% off on all Garmin products (plus free shipping)
    - Garmin surprises you with little gifts on some days like thanks giving, your birthday, Christmas etc
    - Great work environment, people here respect you and listen to what you have to say
    - Garmin provides many internship opportunities for the students
    - Garmin listens to your new product/feature ideas through a website (for employee access only)
    - After coming back to home, you won't feel pressurized about your work. Very good work and life cycle ! You can enjoy your weekend with no work tension !

    Cons

    - Training for the new employee isn't that great until you have it converted full time from your internship.
    - You feel a little low Salary compared to other software guys.
    - Salary hike isn't that great too. I would say, depends on your team and performance.

    Advice to Management

Please arrange training sessions for new employees for the products they will be working with. - Let them know upper level idea of a product and then assign tasks. In this way, employees know what the task is and can give them a chance to think differently and creatively which is beneficial for a company.
    - GARMIN needs good marketing strategy. All the people that I am in touch with, they know Garmin for their GPS systems only but that is just one market that Garmin is expert at but what about others. People do not know other Garmin products.
